India’s aspirations in aerospace technology underscore its quest for self-reliance, particularly in jet engine manufacturing, vital for national defense and industrial growth. In this context, DG Propulsion emerges as a pioneering force, epitomizing India’s drive towards indigenous innovation. As a startup committed to advancing jet engine technology, DG Propulsion not only embodies the spirit of “Make-in-India” but also signifies the nation’s determination to carve a niche in the global aerospace arena.

The “ Make In India” Ideology

India has been actively pursuing self-reliance in aerospace technology through initiatives like “Make-in-India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” These initiatives aim to boost indigenous manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign imports, particularly in critical sectors like defense. In the realm of jet engines, India has sought collaboration with foreign partners to acquire technology and expertise. For instance, discussions with countries like France and the United States have centered on securing full or partial technology transfers for the development of advanced fighter jet engines.

Despite these efforts, domestic initiatives in jet engine development have faced numerous challenges. India’s manufacturing capabilities in this sector have been limited, necessitating reliance on foreign partners for crucial components and technologies. Additionally, the high costs associated with research and development have posed significant hurdles for indigenous projects. These challenges have hindered the progress of initiatives like the Kaveri engine project led by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), resulting in delays and setbacks.

Genesis of DG Propulsion

Prateek Dhawan, the founder of DG Propulsion, embarked on his journey towards jet engine innovation while still a college hobbyist. Alongside his classmates, Anand Utsav Kapoor and Mahesh Kumar Mobiya, Dhawan began experimenting with micro gas turbine engines during his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. Their early projects aimed to harness the power of jet propulsion for applications like distributed power generation in remote areas.

The validation of Dhawan’s work came when a senior officer from the Indian Air Force expressed interest in his engine prototypes. This recognition spurred Dhawan to further pursue his passion for jet engine development. Following his academic pursuits in the United States and gaining industry experience, Dhawan returned to India and formalized his efforts by establishing DG Propulsion. The collaboration with Chirag Gupta, a former Indian Navy personnel who shared Dhawan’s vision, led to the incorporation of the startup in 2019. DG Propulsion’s focus on refining jet engine designs and overcoming challenges in India’s manufacturing ecosystem underscores its commitment to advancing indigenous aerospace technology.

Development and Innovations

During his time in the United States, Prateek Dhawan pursued academic and professional endeavors that enriched his knowledge and expertise in aerospace technology. He obtained a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and filed four patents for innovative concepts related to micro gas turbines and fuel cells. Dhawan also gained valuable industry experience by working with top manufacturing companies like Caterpillar, John Deere, and Rolls-Royce.

Upon returning to India, Dhawan co-founded DG Propulsion with Chirag Gupta, formalizing their commitment to advancing jet engine technology domestically. The company’s primary focus has been on refining jet engine designs to achieve optimal performance. Leveraging Dhawan’s expertise and experience, DG Propulsion has developed innovative solutions for small aircraft and high-lift-power jetpacks.

DG Propulsion’s product offerings are tailored for UAV and defense applications, catering to the growing demand for fast, fuel-efficient, and durable engines in these sectors. The company’s lineup includes the DG J20, J40, and J60 turbojet engines, designed to meet various thrust requirements for unmanned aerial vehicles and defense purposes.

Testing and Milestones

DG Propulsion has undertaken rigorous testing processes to validate the performance and reliability of its engine designs. This includes extensive endurance runs to assess the engines’ capabilities under varying conditions. Recently, the company achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the 1-hour endurance mark during testing, demonstrating the engine’s capability to propel UAVs over long distances.

The implications of this achievement are profound for UAV propulsion, as it opens up new possibilities for extended flight durations and increased operational range. DG Propulsion’s success in pushing the boundaries of endurance testing highlights its commitment to delivering high-performance engines for defense and aerospace applications.

Achieving technical milestones like surpassing the 1-hour endurance mark is crucial for India’s aerospace landscape. It showcases the country’s capability to develop indigenous technologies and demonstrates the potential for self-reliance in critical sectors like defense and aviation. DG Propulsion’s accomplishments contribute to India’s efforts to enhance its aerospace capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign imports.

Beyond Engine Building

Prateek Dhawan envisions DG Propulsion as more than just an engine manufacturing company. He sees it as a catalyst for instilling self-belief in Indian capabilities and nurturing indigenous expertise in aerospace technology. Beyond manufacturing engines, DG Propulsion is committed to in-house development of critical engine components and controllers, showcasing India’s capability to innovate and produce advanced aerospace technologies independently.

The company plans to expand its sales outreach and disseminate knowledge by forging partnerships with academia. These partnerships will not only facilitate technology transfer but also contribute to training and educating the next generation of aerospace engineers in India.

Future Prospects

DG Propulsion’s journey has been marked by significant milestones, but scaling operations requires substantial investment. The company’s funding journey reflects its determination to realize long-term goals, including the design of high-altitude drones and full-scale jet engines. To achieve these goals, Dhawan emphasizes the need for continued financial support and calls for investment to propel DG Propulsion’s growth.

In the broader context of India’s commitment to indigenous aerospace manufacturing, DG Propulsion plays a crucial role. As India aims to bolster its aerospace capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign imports, companies like DG Propulsion are at the forefront of innovation. By developing indigenous technologies and fostering self-reliance, DG Propulsion contributes to India’s strategic objectives in defense and aviation.

With India’s growing emphasis on indigenous aero engine manufacturing, DG Propulsion’s role becomes increasingly significant. The company’s expertise and dedication to innovation align with India’s vision of becoming a global leader in aerospace technology. By leveraging indigenous talent and capabilities, DG Propulsion exemplifies the spirit of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and contributes to India’s journey towards self-reliance in aerospace.

In conclusion, DG Propulsion’s journey symbolizes India’s pursuit of self-reliance in aerospace technology. Through innovation and dedication, DG Propulsion has made significant contributions to India’s aerospace ambitions, showcasing indigenous expertise in jet engine manufacturing. Achieving self-reliance in this critical sector not only enhances national security but also fosters technological sovereignty. With initiatives like DG Propulsion leading the way, India’s aerospace industry is poised for a bright future, marked by innovation, growth, and global competitiveness.
