On Thursday, the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her recent remarks in Rajasthan concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s temple visit. The notice was issued to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra under clause 2 of part I, ‘General Conduct,’ of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for political parties and candidates, which explicitly prohibits criticism of opponents by delving into their private lives.
The EC’s action came in response to a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which alleged that Priyanka Gandhi had violated the Model Code of Conduct during a public rally in Dausa, Rajasthan, on October 20, 2023. In that gathering, Priyanka Gandhi asserted that she had seen on television that when an envelope containing a donation made by Modi at a Devnarayan temple was opened, it contained only Rs 21.

These allegations, which had already been proven false, were further emphasized by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She mentioned that she had seen the news and was uncertain about the claim’s accuracy. She used this misinformation as a launching pad for an attack on the BJP, alleging that they display “envelopes” to the public during elections, but nothing substantial is found in them afterward.

The Election Commission notice indicates that the poll panel received a complaint alleging that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made false statements regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her speech. The EC further stated that her statement had been scrutinized in light of the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct, and it was found to be prima facie violative of these provisions. Consequently, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been asked to respond to the notice by 5 PM on October 30, explaining why appropriate action for violating the Model Code of Conduct should not be taken against her.
It is worth noting that the Model Code of Conduct was put into effect with the announcement of poll dates in Rajasthan by the EC on October 11.
