Unforgettable Disgrace: 11 Notorious incidents that stained world sports

Sports have long been celebrated for their ability to inspire, unite, and showcase the pinnacle of human achievement. Yet, amidst the glories and triumphs, there have been moments that cast a dark shadow on the world of sports, forever etching a stain on its integrity. Here, we recount 11 of the most disgraceful incidents that continue to mar the face of sports.

The Hockey scandal at Berlin [1936]:

Berlin Olympics is known for primarily two things: Jesse Owens’ exploits and Adolf Hitler’s show of power. However, there are some things about this edition that are seldom talked about, one of them being Germany’s “hook or crook strategy” to win the Olympic gold medal.

The field hockey team of India, then under British rule, was well known for their charismatic skills, with the magician himself, i.e., Major Dhyan Chand, leading the team. However, what few people know is that India was one of the few teams, that refused to salute Hitler, owing to his disparaging remarks about India.

As such, German players decided to teach Indians a lesson in their own way. Many players were manhandled, including Major Dhyan Chand, who was literally assaulted mid-way. However, the Indians refused to give up, and they pummelled Germany by 8-1!

The Jewish Exclusion [1936]:

The aforementioned incident wasn’t the only one. Hitler’s hatred for Jews was well known, and though the authorities tried to cover up everything, one incident still stuck out like a sore thumb. Ironically, that wasn’t even the Germans’ fault.

Fearing the situation of watching Jews win the gold and the possible consequences, the American Olympic contingent, in a rather disgraceful move, benched Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller, the frontrunners for Men’s 4 x 100 m. relay. They were replaced by Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe. Incidentally, the chief administrator of the American team was Avery Brundage, whose conduct against Jews post the Munich Olympics massacre led to his downfall.

The Munich Olympics Massacre [1972]:

The 1972 Munich Olympics will forever be marred by the brutal terrorist attack carried out by Palestinian extremists. Eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team lost their lives in a horrifying event that highlighted the vulnerability of major sporting events to political violence.

Pakistan’s ‘Sportsmanship’ [1972]:

However, there was another tragedy that was almost overlooked. In the same Olympics, West Germany broke a powerful tradition in field hockey, i.e. the Asian domination led by India and Pakistan. However, unlike the Indians, who gracefully accepted the bronze, Pakistan showed their real side, and not only did they show their backs to the West German flag during the rendition of the national anthem, but also wore their silver medals on the feet, as a mocking gesture to the host nation.

The Ben Johnson Scandal [1988]:

The 1988 Seoul Olympics saw Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson achieve glory, only to have his gold medal stripped days later, after testing positive for steroids. Johnson’s disgraceful fall emphasized the pervasive issue of doping in sports and the damage it inflicts on the integrity of competition.

The Nancy Kerrigan Attack [1994]:

The figure skating world was stunned by the infamous attack on Nancy Kerrigan orchestrated by her competitor Tonya Harding’s ex-husband. This incident unveiled a sordid tale of jealousy and rivalry that showcased the uglier side of sportsmanship.

The Riot at Eden Gardens [1996]:

Nobody likes to lose, and certainly not in a Cricket World Cup knockout. The tension was skyrocketing as India faced Sri Lanka in the semifinals, chasing a modest 252. India lost one wicket early in Navjot Sidhu, but Sachin Tendulkar held the fort, surprisingly assisted by Sanjay Manjrekar, who chipped in some 25 runs.

The situation was within India’s control at 98/1, when Sachin Tendulkar was stumped at an impressive score of 65. This triggered a massive collapse, and India were soon looking at a colossal defeat of more than 100 runs, the 8th wicket falling at a mere 120 runs. At this moment, the Indian crowd lost their control, and resorted to vandalism, leading to the match being abandoned, and Sri Lanka cruising to the finals on default.

The Match Fixing Explosion [2000]:

Barely had India recovered from the memories of this black day, when the year 2000 changed world cricket for once and for all. While Manoj Prabhakar and the Tahalka magazine were crying foul about the match fixing for months, in fact years, it wasn’t until 15 June 2000, when Hansie Cronje opened a can of worms, confessing to fixing matches, and revealing the names of several South African, as well as Indian and Pakistani players, including the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin. This literally destroyed the reputation of cricket as a ‘Gentleman’s Sport’, and it took years for the fans to recover from the scars!

The Salt Lake City Scandal [2002]:

In a shocking revelation, it was exposed that officials from the Salt Lake City bid committee had bribed International Olympic Committee (IOC) members to secure the city’s selection as the host for the 2002 Winter Olympics. This scandal shattered the Olympic spirit of fair competition and tarnished the reputation of the Games.

The Lance Armstrong Doping Scandal [2013]:

Lance Armstrong’s meteoric rise as a cycling icon crumbled when he was exposed as the mastermind behind an elaborate doping scheme. Stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, Armstrong’s fall from grace remains a stark reminder of the lengths some athletes would go to cheat the system.

FIFA World Cup Scandal [2022]

The World Cup edition at 2022 is a reminder of how low can people stoop to for personal gains. Even the iconic victory of Lionel Messi could not remove the blots that came upon the Qatar edition of the FIFA World Cup. From reports of construction workers being denied even basic rights, to FIFA going out all stops to prevent Russia from participating, this World Cup was known less for football, and more for the controversies that marred it.

These disgraceful incidents serve as constant reminders that the world of sports is not immune to the darker aspects of human nature. The pursuit of victory, fame, and financial gain can sometimes lead individuals and organizations down a path of dishonesty, corruption, and betrayal. The enduring impact of these incidents resonates through the years, urging us to remain vigilant in safeguarding the values that sports represent – fairness, honesty, and the celebration of genuine human achievement.
