7 Indian films that should definitely be a part of your 15 August collection
Share on FacebookShare on X

As the nation gears up to celebrate its independence on 15 August, what better way to honor this momentous occasion than by indulging in a cinematic journey that celebrates the spirit of patriotism, unity, and the struggles that brought us freedom? Here’s a curated list of seven Indian films that deserve a special place in your 15 August collection, each encapsulating a different facet of our nation’s history and values:

Films that deserve a special place in your 15 August collection

Border [1997]:

Based on the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, “Border,” directed by J.P. Dutta, is a stirring tribute to the courage and valor of our soldiers. The film showcases the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army as they face insurmountable odds to protect their motherland. With an ensemble cast and unforgettable performances, “Border” instills a deep sense of pride and respect for our armed forces. It is available for free on YouTube.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha [2001]:

By now, at least some of you, if not all, have witnessed the grand spectacle that is “Gadar 2”. However, the original, “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”, has created a legacy of its own. Despite the vitriol spewed by self-professed critics, the movie made its way into the hearts of every Indian, and subsequently onto the television sets through multiple broadcasts on the occasion of Republic Day and Independence Day. It is available on Zee5, though an uncensored version is also available on ZeeMusic’s YouTube channel.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh [2002]:

Another movie that created a legacy like “Gadar” is the Rajkumar Santoshi directorial “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”. This goes on to prove why Ajay Devgn is a force to reckon with, as he literally brought Sardar Bhagat Singh. Despite the film tanking at box office, the subsequent re runs on various channels of Indian television made it a cult classic. It is available on both YouTube and Amazon Prime.

Swades [2004]:

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, “Swades” is a heartwarming story of an Indian scientist returning to his homeland to bring about change at the grassroots level. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, the film explores the essence of rural India and the need for individuals to contribute to the nation’s progress. “Swades” is a reminder that patriotism lies in building a better future for all. The movie is available on Netflix.

Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran [2018]:

Not many would recommend you this, but this is a story of India’s assertion of her identity. Before “Rocket Boys” made depictions of Indian space scientists and nuclear physicists cool, it took Abhishek Sharma to make a simple but compelling portrayal of one of the most daredevil missions undertaken by India, in the form of the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests. The movie is available on Zee5.

Uri – The Surgical Strike [2019]:

Based on the true events of the 2016 surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army, “Uri,” directed by Aditya Dhar, showcases the unwavering determination and valor of our soldiers. With Vicky Kaushal in a power-packed performance, the film pays homage to the heroes who protect our nation from external threats. “Uri” underscores the importance of security and the sacrifices made by those who ensure it.

Raudram Ranam Rudhiram [2022]:

Now it isn’t that other regions in the Indian film industry haven’t tried their luck in terms of nationalist movies, but few have made an impact as significant as RRR. A fictionalized account of revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitaram Raju, the movie has been a huge hit, both domestically and globally. Also, this is one of the few movies where there has been no adulteration of the freedom movement with Gandhism, showing our raw resistance in the grandest way possible!

Each film encapsulates a unique perspective on our history, culture, and values, reminding us of the sacrifices that led to our independence and the responsibility we bear to uphold its ideals. Whether you’re a cinephile or simply looking for an inspiring watch, these films are sure to ignite your patriotic fervor and leave you with a renewed sense of pride for our incredible nation.
