Manipur, a state known for its historical and cultural uniqueness, has recently been marred by violence and anarchy. However, there may be a deeper angle to the conflict that the public is unaware of. Beneath the surface of what appears to be an ethnic struggle lies a complex web of drug trafficking, arms trade, and external influences seeking to destabilize the region.
The Root Cause
The Manipur conflict’s root cause can be traced to the government’s strict actions against the drugs mafia operating in the region. Manipur’s geographical location, with a 90% hilly area featuring dense forests and an open border with Myanmar, makes it an ideal location for poppy cultivation and an illegal route for drug and arms trafficking. The crackdown on drug trade by the Biren Singh-led government and the High Court’s judgment to allow Meitei settlement in hilly areas rattled the China-CIA supported ecosystem and the Kuki drug overlords.

Now you must be wondering how so? The strategic location of Manipur, sharing its borders with Myanmar, China, and other parts of India, adds to its geopolitical significance. This also makes it a prime target for external forces seeking to finance regime change operations through illegal activities such as drug and arms trafficking. Blocking the drugs trade acts as a significant obstacle to the financial resources of these external forces.

The Motive Behind the Carnage
The ongoing violence in Manipur is driven by forces seeking to remove Chief Minister Biren Singh’s government. These forces, backed by China and the CIA, aim to gain full autonomy over the hills for drug trade. The drug lords, many of whom are illegal migrants from Myanmar, have close links with insurgent groups like the Chin National Army (CNA) and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) operating in both Myanmar and Manipur. They fund and arm militant outfits such as the Kuki National Army (KNA) and ZRA, further escalating the conflict.

Kuki drug lords play a significant role in funding and facilitating the activities of insurgent groups in Manipur. The majority of poppy cultivators, drug processors, and traffickers in the region are Kukis, who believe that prolonged unrest in Manipur enables their illicit drug business to thrive unabated. This symbiotic relationship between drug trade and insurgency poses a grave threat to the stability and security of the region.
The Enigmatic Silence
The central government’s seemingly strange silence on the Manipur conflict has raised questions. Some believe that the government’s reticence is due to its desire to avoid portraying the situation as merely an ethnic struggle. Some might dismiss this as rumor mongering, but if this was purely an ethnic struggle, why would one call for international support?
The parallels between Manipur’s turmoil and conflicts in other regions, such as Kashmir and Punjab, where drug cartels have played a role, cannot be ignored. The presence of drug trafficking often fuels violent unrest and exacerbates existing tensions. This raises concerns about the hidden hand of drug cartels in other regions’ conflicts, hinting at larger geopolitical motives.

The Manipur conflict, often portrayed as an ethnic struggle, carries far-reaching geopolitical implications. Beyond the apparent strife between ethnicities, the region is embroiled in a multi-layered crisis involving drug trafficking, arms trade, and external influences. The Biren Singh-led government’s crackdown on drug cartels has rattled the forces seeking to destabilize the region, making it a crucial battleground in the broader geopolitical landscape.
