10 Indian Music Composers Who Are Yet to Get Their Due Recognition
Share on FacebookShare on X

Indian music is a treasure trove of diverse genres and styles, enriched by the creative genius of numerous composers. While some musicians like AR Rahman, Pritam have garnered immense fame and acclaim, there are several talented individuals who, despite their exceptional contributions, remain relatively unnoticed. In this article, we shed light on ten Indian music composers who are yet to receive the recognition they truly deserve:

1) Madan Mohan:

If one can create brilliant masterpieces from just unused tunes, that too from a composer who died long ago, imagine the potential that was left unused. That was ex Army officer turned musician, Madan Mohan Kohli. You won’t believe that the very man, who gave compositions like “Lag Jaa Gale”, “Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyon”, “Mera Saaya”, was not given his dues.

2) Ilaiyaraaja:

Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Ilaiyaraaja is a maestro who has composed music for over 1,000 films. His melodies are soul-stirring, and his innovative use of orchestration sets him apart. However, his primarily South Indian filmography has limited his exposure and recognition in other parts of the country.

3) Harris Jayaraj:

Imagine a movie, where even the BGM is magnetic. That’s Harris Jayaraj for you. Anyone who has “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein” will never forget how charming the music was. However, unfortunately, Harris’ recognition was limited to just the echelons of Tamil music, and his works in Hindi cinema, if any, were hardly recognized.

4) Adnan Sami:

Hard to imagine, right? But Adnan Sami is as much underrated as a composer as he is popular as a singer. In his debut as a composer with “1920”, Adnan Sami had set the stage on fire with his brilliant compositions, including the much underrated “Vaada Tumse Hai Vaada”, sung by Pandit Jasraj. Sadly, this unique talent of his was never recognized much.

5) Amit Trivedi:

Amit Trivedi’s compositions effortlessly transcend genres, offering a refreshing take on Bollywood music. His fusion of contemporary and traditional elements creates a distinctive sound that resonates with the younger generation. However, his versatility and originality haven’t gained him the widespread recognition he deserves.

I love the space of independent music right now', says composer Amit Trivedi

6) Mithoon:

In the era of Pritams and Tanishk Bagchis, Mithoon’s music is like a breath of fresh air. Even if the film doesn’t work, Mithoon’s music will. “Anwar” is a testament to his immense talent, which has unfortunately, not been given its due.

7) Shantanu Moitra:

Known for his soulful melodies and heartwarming compositions, Shantanu Moitra has contributed immensely to Indian cinema. His music often evokes a sense of nostalgia and simplicity, yet he has not achieved the widespread recognition that his talents merit.

8) Achint Thakkar:

Imagine someone making the whole nation sway to his BGMs. That’s the power of Achint Thakkar, the very guy who created rock solid compositions for the iconic web series “Scam 1992” and “Rocket Boys”. However, it is tragic that not many about this gem of a musician.

9) Sneha Khanwalkar:

Breaking stereotypes with her bold and experimental soundtracks, Sneha Khanwalkar has revolutionized the music scene in Hindi cinema. Her work in films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” showcases her ability to seamlessly blend unconventional sounds and regional folk music. Yet, she remains relatively unknown outside niche circles.

10) Vishal Chandrashekhar:

In times marred by remixes and autotunes, soulful music is almost unheard of. However, with Vishal Chandrashekhar, that’s not the case. If “Sita Ramam” is a film to be remembered, it owes a significant chunk of the same to this composer, who brought back the nostalgic moments of the early sixties with his compositions. It is sad that it took this long for Indians to recognize his talent.

The world of Indian music is blessed with an abundance of extraordinary talents, some of whom have yet to receive their due recognition. These ten composers mentioned above have consistently showcased their brilliance through their compositions, but factors like regional limitations, industry politics, and audience preferences have hindered their journey to widespread acclaim. It is essential for music enthusiasts, critics, and the industry as a whole to acknowledge and appreciate their exceptional contributions, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
