Ramanathaswamy Temple – Guide

Rameshwaram Temple also known as Ramanathaswamy Temple is located in the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu. This temple is a holy shrine of Hindus and is considered as one of the Char Dham. Rameshwaram Temple is also known as Ramanatha Swami Temple. The Shivling established in this temple is considered to be one of the twelve Dwadash Jyotirlingas. Rameshwaram is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal and is a conch shaped island.

History of this Temple

It is believed that Lord Rama, while returning from Sri Lanka, worshiped Lord Shiva, the God of Gods, at this place. Ramanathaswamy Temple and Rameshwar island were named after him. Lord Rama wanted to worship Shiva to remove the guilt of killing a Brahmin. Shri Hanuman was sent to Mount Kailash to bring the idol of Lord Shiva. When Hanuman did not reach with the Shivling on time, Goddess Sita made a Shivling by tying sea sand in her fist and Lord Rama worshiped the same Shivling. Later the Shivling brought by Hanuman was also installed there.

After this, in the 15^th century, King Udaiyan Sethupathi and Nagur resident Vaishya got its 78 feet high gopuram constructed in 1450 AD. Then in the 16^th century, Tirumalaya Sethupathi built the second part of the wall to the south of the temple. It is believed that the Rameswaram temple in its present form was built in the 17^th century.

Best time to visit Ramanathaswamy Temple

Mahashivratri festival is celebrated in Ramanathaswamy Temple in a wonderful way in the month of February-March, which lasts for a total of 10 days. In the month of May-June, a festival called Vasanthotsavam is celebrated in this temple which lasts for ten days and ends on Vaishakh. The festival called Thirukkalyanam is also a big festival of Rameswaram temple which lasts for 17 days.

Ramanathaswamy Temple Timings

Ramanathaswamy Temple opens from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the morning and from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 8:00 PM in the evening.
