Illegal pharmaceutical companies: Under PM Narendra Modi, the Indian government has been working with a positive attitude, even finding opportunity in the toughest of times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Operation Vaccine Maitri is the prime example of how India increased its geopolitical clout when other nations were purely working as greedy nations and lost their soft power. Mind you, this happened when there was no clear-cut path to get out of the Chinese mess.
This parallel underscored the magnitude of the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which has proudly earned the moniker “Pharmacy of the World.” However, as they say, it’s easier to reach the top than to remain in that position for too long. There have been several challenges that have tried to show Indian pharma in a bad light, and this includes players from inside India and outside.
Crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical companies
Recently, the Modi government cancelled the licences of 18 illegal pharmaceutical companies for manufacturing spurious medicines. The decision came after inspections by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on 76 companies across 20 states.
As per media reports, a nationwide crackdown is underway on Illegal pharmaceutical companies that are related to the manufacturing of spurious medicines.
As per reports, during the crackdown against companies producing and manufacturing spurious medicines, actions were taken against 70 companies in Himachal Pradesh, 45 in Uttarakhand, and 23 in Madhya Pradesh.

An official told the media, “Licences of 18 Illegal pharmaceutical companies have been cancelled for manufacturing spurious and adulterated drugs and for violating GMP (good manufacturing practise). Besides, 26 firms have been given show cause notices”.
Incidents that were harming India’s interest
Recently, concerns were raised regarding the quality of drugs produced by Indian-based pharmaceutical companies. For example, earlier in February, Global Pharma Healthcare, which is based in Tamil Nadu, recalled its entire batch of eye drops as they were allegedly linked to cases of vision loss in the US.
Prior to that, Indian-made cough syrups were accused of being responsible for last year’s deaths of infants in the Gambia and Uzbekistan.

This necessitated stern action on operators that are involved in making spurious medicines and vaccine shots. Several countries of the world, including the former pharmacy of the world, Germany, have been trying to dethrone India to claim this tag and enjoy the lion’s share of pharmaceutical exports in the world.
It is time that this action be ramped up to its maximum, while at the same time it is required to ensure that no international player can engage in foul play to lure Indian companies into harming the nation’s interest and deliberately manufacture spurious medication or vaccines.
