overall exports of India have crossed the mark of $750 billion. “This is an all-time high, and the achievement comes in the 75th year of independence, as the country is celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, Union Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal said while addressing the ASSOCHAM session of 2023.
India has been successful in keeping its economy ahead of others, despite the exceedingly difficult conditions of high inflation and the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. India now touchs $750 billion, up from $500 billion in 2020–2021. Notably, the nation’s goods and services exports reached record highs of $422 billion and $254 billion in 2021–22, respectively, bringing the total dispatches to $676 billion.
Celebrating the accomplishments, Piyush Goyal stated, “There has been healthy growth in both the merchandise and service sectors.” Additionally, he said, given the fact that most developed countries are experiencing historically high inflation, interest rates are rising rapidly, and there is a general feeling of doom and gloom throughout the rest of the globe, “India’s performance fills us with pride”.
“The G20 presidency has given a unique opportunity to position India globally, and this must be leveraged by the industry and business persons to showcase India’s business across the world”, Goyal said.

Comparing the past with contemporary
However, climbing up the ladder required effort and time. overall exports of India decreased in February for the third straight month by 8.8 percent to $33.88 billion from $37.15 billion in the same month last year, according to data released by the commerce ministry earlier this month. On the other hand, there were imports, which fell by 8.21 percent to $51.31 billion from $55.9 billion in the same month last year. The nation’s trade imbalance for the month of February was $17.43 billion.

To note, the all-time export high can be considered a step forward from what Piyush Goyal said last year at the Exports Conclave in Chennai. While emphasising the export momentum, he said the country will achieve its $2 trillion export target for goods and services by 2030.
Evidently, India is poised to clock impressive export numbers in the coming years. There was a time when India had to feed its population using the crumbs thrown at it by the rich and powerful countries in the west.
