Patan Devi Mandir – Guide 

Patan Devi Mandir is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Patna, the capital of the state of Bihar in India. This ancient temple, originally called Maa Sarvananda Kari Patneshwari, is believed to be the abode of Goddess Durga. The temple is considered to be one of the 51 Siddha Shakti Peethas of the country. Even the name of the city of Patna is believed to be derived from the name of the massive Patan Devi temple.

History of this Temple

Such legends attach great importance to the historical Bari Patan Devi Mandir. It is believed that the ‘right thigh’ of Goddess Sati, the first wife of Shiva, fell here after it was severed by Lord Vishnu with his ‘Sudarshan Chakra’. Hindu mythology suggests that the right thigh of Goddess Sati fell in Magadha and legend has it that various parts of Sati’s body fell in both the Maharaj Ganj and Chowk areas of the old Patna city.

Hence, the Badi Patan Devi Temple, as well as the Chhoti Patan Devi Temple, were constructed in these places of the city. The Tantra Charumani states that the smaller images of the Badi Patan Devi Temple, Patna are goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati.

Patan Devi Mandir Timings

Patan Devi Mandir timings are from 6 am to 10 pm. Tuesday is considered a special day for all the devotees and a large number of devotees throng the temple for darshan.

Agam Kuan

This is the oldest and most important archaeological site in the city of Patna and the complex houses many ancient and medieval sculptures.

Buddha Smriti Park

Also known as Buddha Smriti Park, this park was inaugurated by His Holiness the 14^th Dalai Lama and is located on Fraser Road near Patna Junction.

Kamaldah Jain Temple

It is an ancient Jain temple situated near Gulzarbagh Railway Station and is one of the oldest Jain complexes in Patna city.

Golghar

This stupa is a granary in architectural style and offers a wonderful panoramic view of Patna city and river Ganges.

Mahavir Mandir

One of the most famous Hindu temples, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Mahavir Mandir is located opposite Patna Junction and is the second most visited religious temple in North India.

Padri Ki Haveli

Also known as St. Mary’s Church, it is one of the major religious places and also the oldest church in the state of Bihar.
