India is a land of rich heritage, be it religious, cultural or linguistic. And in the Sanatan scriptures there is a saying,
पूत सपूत तो का धन संचय पूत कपूत तो का धन संचय |
It translates to, ‘One does not need to hoard/save assets for the son, as if the son is good enough, he will earn for himself and if he is bad, he will lose the saved one too.’ The saying seems to fit the Uddhav Thackeray- Shinde crisis, as according to the latest decision of the Election Commission of India, Shiv Sena no longer belongs to the Thackeray family.
Shinde faction to be Shiv Sena: Election Commission
The Election Commission has recognised Eknath Shinde’s faction as the real Shiv Sena, finally after 8 months of the rebellion. From now, the Shinde group would use the name, Shiv Sena, while the Uddhav Thackeray led faction would be called as Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) said the recent decision.
As per the commission, the possession of the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol will rest with the Shinde team. The ‘bow and arrow’ symbol is revered among the political circles and Shiv Sainiks as the original symbol of Shiv Sena. The flaming torch or the ‘mashaal’ symbol has been allotted to the Uddhav Thackeray led faction.
The commission’s decision was based on the support claimed by the two factions. In the order, EC said that Shinde’s faction is supported by MLAs with 76% of the party’s winning votes in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections.
The decision has been taken citing the 1971 Supreme Court judgement in Sadiq Ali vs Election Commission of India case, where the apex court had opined that disputes among groups of a political party would be resolved by citing majority support from the organisational and legislative wing of the party.

Uddhav trains his guns on EC, calls Shinde thief
While Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was jubilant over the decision, the order didn’t seem to go well with former CM and Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray. Balasaheb’s son and former party supremo called the decision a “murder of democracy”.
Uddhav Thackeray while addressing his supporters at Matoshree launched a dastardly attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the Election Commission has given order to abide by the union government and referred to the body as a slave. Saying that the defection was planned to strengthen their hold in Maharashtra, Uddhav claimed that Modi needed to “wear Balasaheb Thackeray’s mask” to come to Maharashtra.
Later in his address, he also challenged the supporters of Eknath Shinde of elections and said, “If they’re men, come in front of us even with the stolen ‘bow and arrow’, we’ll contest the election with the ‘torch’. This is our test, the battle has begun.”
Balasaheb Thackeray established the Shiv Sena to help the people of Maharashtra. The party then forayed into politics, with the agenda of ‘son of the soil’ politics along with Hindutva. Uddhav, who took over from Balasaheb, gave up all the ideals and ‘secularised’ Shiv Sena. All that is happening now, can be seen as an effect of this.
