China Nepal DAM: It is no hidden fact that China wants to dominate the world starting with Asia. In order to be the Asian hegemon, it desperately needs to take India down. But that is more of a dream which is never going to come true. Despite this, China has no intention to drop its muddy tactics. And now it is trying to open another front against India by using Nepal as its shield.
China: A new Nepal ‘Dam’ front
According to report, China is building a huge dam on the Mabuja Zambo River few kilometers north of the India-Nepal border, with the intention of using it as a military weapon in potential water wars. Additionally, China is said to be planning the construction of an airport close to the dam to facilitate the movement of its air force.
Recently, China initiated a project to build a dam at the border with the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The dam is to be constructed on Tsangpo River which flows into Arunachal and Assam. The project was countered by India through the announcement of new dam project on Subhansiri river.
Later, the China Yangtze Power Company put forth a plan to construct a massive tunnel beneath the ridge that separates the two parts of the Big Bend. This tunnel would redirect 50 billion cubic meters of water each year to the southeastern incline, where it would flow over nine hydropower dams in a cascading manner, producing a peak output of 40,000 MW of electricity.
Redirecting water could potentially place pressure on the agricultural requirements in India’s northeast, and poor management could result in overflows and flooding. This could also harm the food security and livelihoods of those living along the river. Some experts have warned that building dams could cause the river to lose its sediment, leading to a decline in agricultural productivity.

Trap for India
The construction of air field at the borders opens another front for war apart from Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Sikkim. This is also worth considering as the use of debt-trap diplomacy by China has incurred unbearable consequences on other countries. The situation of Sri Lanka and Pakistan is an example from which Nepal should have learnt. On the other hand, the economically fragile neighbors become the liability for India. So, India needs to tackle this situation as soon as possible.
