Dharmapuri Temple, Telangana – Overview
Dharmapuri is a town in the Jagatyal district of Telangana. The place acquires spiritual significance due to the presence of a temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Dharmapuri Temple is situated on the southern bank of the holy river Godavari. This temple is called Hari-Hara Kshetram because of the presence of both Vishnu and Shiva.

This historical city is mentioned in epics and in many literary works it is mentioned as ‘Dharmapura’ in Skandha Purana and Brahmanda Purana. Dharmapuri is mentioned as Dharmarama in the Deckal Banda inscription of the Rashtrakutas during the Buddhist period. Its name is also found in the writings of Ekmarnath of the Kakatiya period. The Kakatiyas were powerful rulers of large parts of the Deccan for about 400 years (950 CE– 1323 CE).
Historical evidence suggests that the place was under the rule of Hindu kings like Badami Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Recherla Velamas. It is known from the inscriptions that this temple was built in 1018 AD. This temple was demolished by the Muslim rulers in 1422 – 1436 AD. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and the temple has been able to retain its past glory despite attacks by Muslim dynasties under the Aurangzeb period.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Dharmapuri, the Hogenakkal Falls is often referred to as the Niagara of India. The falls cascade down from the Melagiri Hills at an average height of 750 feet above sea level. Tirthamalai Temple
Among the top places for sightseeing in Dharmapuri is the famous Tirthamalai Temple. Built in the 7th century, this temple saw immense contribution from the Chola and Pandya kingdoms. It is considered one of the holiest places of worship in South India. Perched atop a hill, the temple is located in the Harur taluk area of Dharmapuri. Every year on the occasion of Mahashivratri, the temple is thronged by devotees.
Kottai Kovil
Kottai Kovil also known as Mallikarjuneshwara Temple, Kottai Kovil is a major place of worship and sightseeing in Dharmapuri. The temple is situated in the northern part of Dharmapuri. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is popular among tourists for its unique architecture, rare sculpture and beautiful paintings on its walls. A major attraction of the temple is a unique architecture known as ‘Hanging Pillar’.

By Road- Direct bus is available from Karimnagar, Hyderabad, Mancherial, Ramagundam. Buses are also available is more from Karimnagar, Mancherial railway stations. Roads to this temple are well connected with other cities so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle from any part of the country.
