Was ‘Sangam’ a way for Raj Kapoor to express his feelings?
In 1964, Raj Kapoor-starrer film Sangam graced the theatre screen. It was a romantic film with Raj Kapoor, Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead roles. Apart from the main lead, Raj Kapoor was also the director, producer and editor of the movie.
Reportedly, the movie had many first to its name. It was Raj Kapoor’s first colour film. Additionally, it was the first movie to be made completely on a foreign set thus making it one of the most expensive movies of that time. With a run time of around four hours, it had the longest runtime for any Indian film.

The Film ‘Sangam’ had many timeless songs like ‘Bol Radha Bol‘, ‘Main Kya Karoon Ram‘ and ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega‘ among others. These hit songs are still a fresh in the memories of Cinema lovers. With amazing chemistry between the leads, foreign shot locations, multi-star cast and melodious voice of Mukesh made the film a smashing hit. It made a box office business of around Rs 8 crores that speaks volume about its commercial success.
But, the most remarkable and talked about aspect of the movie is the song “Dost Dost na raha” in the blessed voice of playback singer Mukesh. ‘Dost Dost Na Raha’ song was somewhat a passionate expression of Raj Kapoor’s feelings in real life. Apparently, it was directed at none other than the famous ‘Jubilee Kumar’ Rajendra Kumar who was once a close friend of Raj Kapoor.
A sour friendship is more dangerous than ardent Enemy
There were several controversies around the movie which played heavily to its advantage. There were reports that the movie was first offered to elegant beauty Nargis. However, she turned down the offer as she would have been casted opposite to Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar with whom she had a difficult history.
Evidently, the elegant beauty Nargis earlier had a love affair with Raj Kapoor but the duo couldn’t officiate their relationship as Raj Kapoor was a married man and decided to part ways. Soon, the enemies of peace and sanity, the media kicked in and started carrying out a smear campaign and concocted stories against their relationship, even labelling it with derogatory tags. Grief-stricken by the separation and the negativity, Nargis went into a state of depression.

By then, Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Nargis had worked together in the film Mother India. In the 1960s, Nargis was an unparalleled beauty as had one of the best acting skills and millions were in love with her including Rajendra Kumar.
Later on, Rajendra Kumar went on to propose Nargis to marry him but Nargis respectfully declined his proposal stating the fact that it was not possible for her to even ponder on such propositions as they had appeared onscreen in mother-son relationship.
Ironically, she later developed affection with Sunil Dutt who had a refreshing view on life. He pulled her out from the state of depression and finally got married to her. Reportedly, Rajendra Kumar played a positive role in their relationship. It is on this account that Raj Kapoor was deeply hurt by the acts of his close friend Rajendra Kumar .
Then After, both Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar were never on good terms and hence the lyrics of the song ‘Dost Dost na raha’ are accredited to be the real feelings of Raj Kapoor towards his long lost friendship with Rajendra Kumar.
