Do you know that there are many differences between a ‘star’ and an actor? The major difference is that the so-called stars need several crutches to maintain the false aura around their stardom. On the contrary, an actor can pull a failed project on his acting skills and infuse life into it.
A few days earlier we explained how the so-called ‘King of Romance’ Mr Shah Rukh Khan failed to experiment. He couldn’t prove himself as a versatile actor and is failing to remain relevant. Now, we will analyse the career graph of so-called ‘Mr Perfectionist’ Aamir Khan. We will explain why he stands nowhere in the league of actors like KK Menon, Manoj Bajpayee and Pankaj Tripathi among others.
Actor driven movie vs Director’s baby
There are very few examples of movies where the same person has done justice with acting as well as direction of the movie. Rishab Shetty in Kantara is one of them. But barring these few exceptions, the movies can be broadly classified into two categories.
One type of movie is a purely performance driven one. The acting skills of the actor forces audiences to overlook the flaws or messy plot line. Kabir Singh and Hera Pheri Series are the best examples of it. The performances of the main star cast amazed and entertained the audiences even when the movie had not a very refreshing idea to tell.
The other classification is a director’s movie. In such movies, the story plays the central role and every minute details of the plot line or character arc can alter the fate of the movie. Movies like Lakshya and Guru are the best examples of directors’ movies. They had such a powerful storyline that replacing the main star cast would not have changed the narration style or even fate of the movie.
Such types of movies are the stars’ safest bet. Even after all the hard work by directors, these ‘stars’ later hijack the credit of its success. Aamir Khan has been doing the same for the past few decades. There is a clear-cut pattern to explain this.

How a failing actor became the so-called Mr Perfectionist
In the early 2000s, Aamir Khan suffered back-to-back failures at the box office. His movies Mela and Mann failed miserably. Having realised his failing graph, Aamir Khan adopted a strategy. Under the new strategy he would only work with established directors rather than himself taking the charge as happened during Mela or Mann.
With Ashutosh Gawarikar he did Lagaan. However, he didn’t receive much success and Sunny Deol’s Gaddar overshadowed Aamir’s Lagaan. But by then, Aamir realised that this was much better for him than to go back on the destructive path of Mela or Mann.
Then this wilful surrender to the director did him wonders in the form of the success of Rang de Basanti. It was a pure director’s baby in which a strong storyline gave ample space for actors to shine. This continued further with Taare Zameen Par in which he cleverly defeated Akshay Khanna to back the role and then stole the directorial role from Amol Gupte.

After that he mostly worked in director driven movies like Ghajini, Dangal, 3 idiots and PK among others. With the hard work of directors or strong scripts, Aamir Khan regularly set records and gave Bollywood its first movie in Rs 100 crore (Ghajini), Rs 200 crore (3 idiots), and Rs 300 crore (PK) clubs.
With back-to-back success, his stature started to grow. He used this to his advantage and in strong scripts, he would cut or reduce the role of other actors to make his role more impactful and grander. In the meantime, he ventured outside this directorial crutch. He starred in the successful sequel of Dhoom which already had a huge fan base. The movie was a success but as per acting skills it would fail to score decent marks.

Arrogance of Stardom
The PR strategy worked for Aamir Khan for a very long time. He hijacked the credit of his directors and built an image of Mr Perfectionist. But as they say, a lie can’t become a truth even if it is repeated a thousand times.
Aamir Khan fell for the false aura of Mr Perfectionist around him. Arrogantly, he tried to pull movies on his stardom alone. But this idea boomeranged and busted the myth of him being an actor. The awful movies like Thugs of Hindustan and Lal Singh Chaddha proved that he lacked the crucial acting skills like those of Pankaj Tripathi to do justice with every role in every other movie.

The cliche dimwit presentation of PK was repeated in LSC and again highlighted the fact that he is just a director’s actor. It is high time that Aamir Khan realises the limitations of his skills and does Justice with what he can do at best, that is acting in director driven movies.
