The political discourse is fast degrading in India. Opposition on the grounds of principle, philosophy or merit in the issue, is becoming a rare thing. Unfounded criticism and accusations are becoming a norm. To score political brownie points, parties are not refraining from twisting facts and manufacturing needless controversies.
Even non-partisan events like Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav are being politicised. Evidently, to tarnish the image of the Modi government, Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao has spun a false narrative on the shoulder of a half-baked propaganda article published in ‘The Hindu’.
Far-sighted vision or another goof-up?
Recently, Telangana CM’s son, KT Rama Rao made a tweet peddling a false narrative. He made an unfounded claim that India will be importing National flags from China. He accused the Modi government of failing to plan in advance for the 75th Independence Day. In his tweet, he also took jibe on PM Modi’s flagship programmes – Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He based his accusations on a half-baked article published in ‘The Hindu’. However, even in the crappy article there was no mention of China.

This raises a question: was the China angle a figment of his imagination? Or did he overplay ‘The Hindu-China’ bonhomme. Or is it that he possesses a very high IQ which can pull up things that aren’t mentioned, spoken or not even remotely connected?
His understanding seems to be at a completely different level from ordinary Indian citizens. Mind you, just like Rahul Gandhi, KT Rama Rao son of Telangana CM KCR too falls in the category of dynastic politics. Just like his Congress counter-part Rahul Gandhi he has been giving baseless statements which have become a cause of mockery for him and the party.

Was the Article a misrepresentation of facts?
The article published in The Hindu was full of falsehoods and twisted statements of Tourism and Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy. There were so many shortcomings in the half baked article that the publication, ‘The Hindu’, had to make major changes in the article when it faced massive backlash for its ridiculous twisting of facts.

Earlier, the article headline claimed, “Kishan Reddy defends flag import” with subheading as “Country’s khadi industry cannot meet demand for Har Ghar Tiranga scheme”.
In reality the Minister G Kishan Reddy only explained the rationale and need of making the amendments to the Flag Code of India, 2002. He rejected the journalists’ claim that the amendment will benefit China alone. He categorically said that India is stitching flags in villages with self help groups.
He also refuted false claims that amendment adding polyester will severely affect the Khadi industry. He responded by saying that all the Khadi industries have been given orders to provide National flags. With that he added the rationale of allowing polyester flags.
He said, “We have given orders to all the khadi and cottage industries in the country. We need crores of flags for the Har Ghar Tiranga programme planned recently. They cannot meet the demand in such a short duration. You need to understand”.

India is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark the 75th year of Independence. To make it more memorable the government recently started ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme. Under this, the government has set an ambitious target to hoist the National flag on every rooftop.
The ambitious target by the government required a massive transformational shift in the production of National flags and removal of few legislative hurdles. To ease restrictions and upscale National flag production, the Modi government amended the Flag Code of India, 2002. With this amendment, it is now possible to make National flags with polyester.
However, this non-partisan, apolitical, public movement witnessed this shameful and unfounded controversy.
It needs another level of insanity to claim that with this amendment India will start importing National flags from China. This outrageous linkage was cleverly retracted by the publication ‘The Hindu’. It changed the headline and did away with all the previous claims falsely attributed to Union Minister Kishan Reddy. It is disheartening to see that Minister KT Rama Rao who has the responsibility of multiple portfolios stopped at such a low level and peddled fake news.
