It is an indisputable fact that United States is the most potent Army in the world. It has got most sophisticated and technologically advanced weapon systems. But, it is facing a serious problem now. The Army is lacking manpower to operate those high-grade weapons. Any attempt to hire new rangroots is failing and this phenomenon will impact geopolitical equations and India is fully ready for that.
United States’ Army is failing
According to a report by Times of India, Americans are not even interested in defending their own country. With just two and half month left for this fiscal year to end, only 50 per cent of the recruitment target has been achieved. Even if something extraordinary happens, by October, US Army will lack at least 10,000 new recruits. The Army is down to lowering standards for getting more manpower. The organisation which is supposed to teach values of selfless service is now increasing financial incentive to pull in more young recruits. Moreover, increasing lifestyle related diseases in the country means that only 23 per cent of youth are ready to serve. In other words, the double whammy of unfit youth and their reluctance to serve the country is hurting US BIG TIME!!.
Christine Wormouth, spokesperson for Army Secretary said, “The Army is facing our most challenging recruiting environment since the inception of the all-volunteer force. This is not a one-year challenge. We will not solve this overnight,…”
The low recruitment numbers is not the only metric highlighting the structural problem. Apparently, United States Army was prepared to replace 25 per cent of its soldiers with robots by 2030, but declining economy does not allow that leeway.
Expansion of NATO
These issues are not something which could be sorted out easily in near future. World should be prepared for the downfall of United States military. There is certain kind of inevitability to it. The chances are that United States will get jittery and its indications are already there. Its continuous emphasis on expansion of NATO is one such example. While Vladimir Putin was constantly warning against including Ukraine in NATO, Biden did not listen.
End of Pan-Arabism
It became one of the reasons for the current crisis. Even after then, US administrators did not listen. Sweden and Finland are the latest ones to join the bandwagon. Additionally, United States is lessening its presence in nearly 800 military bases all around the world. One of them is Middle East and even Biden emphasised on this very aspect during his recent visit to the region. US’ slow withdrawal from the region means that the bloc will no longer serve as Arab world and in fact, era of nationalism is taking shape in the region. Countries are caring more for their national interest than the pan-Arabism. But, at the same time, an Arabian NATO is also in the making, ensuring the protection of region.
India is prepared for the expansion of NATO
Now, let’s address the elephant in the region, which is implication for India. To counter expansion of NATO, Russia will be taking the initiatives and being a member of BRICS, India’s role becomes crucial. By increasing its cooperation with Russia along with its Aatmanirbharta in defence, India is well placed in that regard. After all, offence is the best defence.
I2U2 to act as buffer
Talking about the end of pan-Arabism, United States may skirt its hand from securing the region, but it won’t disappear and maintain its presence through diplomacy. Thankfully, PM Modi’s overtures towards individual Arab nations in last 8 years has ensured that India is strategically well-placed in the region. I2U2 with Israel, US and UAE will prove to be big buffer for India. Only concern is that United States may push India for increasing its military presence in the region. India is well placed to decide on its own terms.
Pak is the only concern
The only big concern is our terrorist neighbour. Since, US won’t be sending forces in our neighbourhood for at least a decade, it will be fuelling Pakistan and henceforth Afghanistan with more Dollars, which will increase their weapon purchasing capacity. The result may be increased infiltration attempts on Indian border.
Empires fall, monarchs disappear and new ones take its place. Often new ones are more pragmatic than the old ones. Fall of the USA is a good opportunity for India to change Asian Century into Indian Century.
