INSPACe – An institutionalized process to create companies like Space-X
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (INSPACe) headquarters in Bopal and Ahmedabad. On the occasion, delivering his speech he said “INSPACe is an unprecedented opportunity for the youth of India to showcase their talent to the best scientific minds of India”. Further defining the IN-SPACe opportunities he said “INSPACe has a lot of potential to revolutionize India’s space industry and that is why I would definitely say today that Watch this space. INSPACe is for Space, INSPACe is for Pace, INSPACe is for Ace”.
Further accounting for the benefits of the creation of INSPACe he said “INSPACe will work in facilitating the transfer of technology among space industry, startups, and ISRO. It is also being ensured that the private sector can also use the resources of ISRO and work together with ISRO”.

Private Companies can use the facilities of ISRO
INSPACe is an independent single window nodal agency under the Department of Space for allowing space activities and usage of government-owned facilities by Non-Government Private Entities (NGPEs). It will facilitate the use of state-of-the-art equipment for the design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of satellites for Indian companies.
It will provide an integrated launch manifest platform for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), National Space India Limited (NSIL), and Non-Government Private Entities (NGPEs). According to the ISRO, the key roles and responsibilities of the INSPACe include: –
- Space activities include the building of launch vehicles and satellites and providing space-based services as per the definition of space activities.
- Sharing of space infrastructure and premises under the control of ISRO with due consideration to ongoing activities.
- Establishment of temporary facilities within premises under ISRO control based on safety norms and feasibility assessment
- Establishment of new space infrastructure and facilities, by NGPEs, in pursuance of space activities based on safety norms and other statutory guidelines and necessary clearances.
- Initiation of launch campaign and launch, based on the readiness of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems, ground, and user segment.
- Building, operation, and control of spacecraft for registration as Indian Satellite by NGPEs and all the associated infrastructure for the same.
- Usage of spacecraft data and rolling out of space-based services and all the associated infrastructure for the same.

The logistical and research expertise provided by ISRO to NGPEs is proving to be a boon for the growth of private companies. Due to the aggressive push for the inculcation of private players in the space launching system, ISRO is trying to outsource some of its launch manifest technologies and bring private expertise to the space industry. It will allow the young students, researchers, private industries, and academic bodies to access the space assets and harness the commercial space in the industry. On one hand, it will provide commercially viable technological job opportunities in India itself, and on the other, it will help in growing large space-based aligned private companies.
Like American private companies Space-X, domestic companies like Dhruva Space, Bellatrix Aerospace, AgniKul Cosmos, Manastu Space, Skyroot Aerospace, Satellize, and Pixxel are proving to be commercially viable and technologically capable of utilizing this space by using the state-of-the-art facilities of ISRO. The domain of these private companies includes – designing and manufacturing small satellites, launch vehicles, rocket propulsion engines, data gathering, imagery, communication, and other spacecraft components.
The involvement of private companies will fulfill the space left by ISRO in private industries. The projects of most of the companies will align with profits. Profit can be made only through commercially viable projects and private companies’ expertise in exploring the possibilities and opportunities of products that can be used by the public at large and can generate revenue will prove to be a boon for all, government, private, and common people.
