Over the years, the gentleman’s game of cricket has gained immense popularity in the world. Originating from the measure of racial equality and political progress of colonial powers, Cricket’s growth is phenomenal. Its assimilation into the culture of countries like India has helped this game to grow both in terms of skills as well as business. But, with excessive involvement of money, fame, and power, the game of cricket is in a state of decline and domestic short format type’s tournaments are one of the key causes of this.
Two-and-a-half month window for IPL
According to the recently released ICC – Future Tour Programs (FTP) for 2023, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been provided with an official two-and-a-half-month window in which no international cricket program for men will happen. The decision has been taken to provide all the top international cricketers an opportunity to participate in the domestic t-20 tournament in India.
The tentative time for IPL 2023 is around the last week of March to the last week of May, and the ICC -Future Tour Programs 2023 has not scheduled any international tournament program in the months of April and May.
Talking about the clash of the timing of IPL with Future Tour Programs commitments, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in an interview that “from the next ICC Future Tour Programs calendar, IPL will have an official two-and-a-half-month window so that all the top international crickets can participate ”.

Death Warrant of Cricket
The recently concluded Rs 48,390 crores bid for IPL’s media rights has confirmed that the tournament’s business is growing at a fast pace. From 2008 to 2022, IPL has changed the course of cricket.
The short form 40 over’s game concludes in 4 hours with high intensity and aggressive playing style. The format of the game gives sufficient room for young and aggressive players to make a name & money in a very short period. At a very young age, players are earning enormous money but the skill of the game is in a state of decline.
The popularity of IPL has overshadowed the long-format games like one day and test. The result of this decline in the long format of the game is the degenerative skills of players. The players like Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, and Glenn MacGrath are known to be one of the most skillful players of cricket. But the 20-20 games have rarely provided any skilled players like them. Leave the new players, even established skilled players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not able to cope with this trend.

The earlier pattern of the game used to give sufficient time to groom and gain the required skill to players. Firstly, gaining enough experience from the domestic tournament, and then with enough skill, playing in an international format. This structured and layered development of players resulted in the rise of good quality players and the overall standard of the game used to be on a different level.
But breeding of tournaments like IPL has resulted in the decreasing quality of players and overall declining standards of cricket. Investments of enormous money have often resulted in increasing the greed and decreasing morality of players which ultimately increases incidents of betting, match-fixing, and other stuff like branding or marketing. Leaving the little room for growth of cricket, this short-form game structure has engulfed the gentleman game and has made it a game of ruffians. The ICC’s decision to give special window to IPL seems be the death warrant of Cricket.
