Pakistan as a country has been condemned on the global platforms in various aspects ranging from state-sponsored terrorism to political instability. The snivel rape incidents are not a new phenomenon in the territory of Pakistan. And once again it has marked an atrocious incident representing its evil deeds.
Pakistan’s Punjab under “Emergency”
Recently, Pakistan’s Punjab province has declared an “Emergency” due to the continuous surge in cases of sexual abuse against Women and Children.
“Four to five cases of rape are being reported daily in Punjab due to which the government is considering special measures to deal with the cases of sexual harassment, abuse, and coercion. To deal with rape cases, the administration has declared an emergency”, said the Punjab Home Minister, Atta Tarar, in a press conference on 20 June.
He expressed the seriousness of the issue by saying that increase in such cases is a serious issue for society and government officials. The minister also emphasized that parents should teach their children the importance of safety.
Tarar said, “The accused in a number of cases have been detained. A system will be implemented in two weeks to reduce the incidents.” In addition, he also stated that the government has launched an anti-rape campaign in which students will be made aware of sexual harassment.
Statistics that uncover the reality
Talking through the statistics, it can be noted that there is a rampant lack of safety and security in Pakistan. Apart from cases of Women’s harassment, there is a surge in cases of domestic violence and other discriminatory activities.
The recent Global Gender Index 2021 shows the ranking of Pakistan at 153 out of 156 countries. It’s just above Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen. This ranking is among the last four positions which are really concerning as a nation.
The condition of Pakistan in terms of women’s safety is consistently deteriorating. In 2017, it was at 143 and further slipped to 148 in 2018. On the other hand, there was a report published by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), which revealed that at least 11 rape cases are reported daily.
The Human Rights Ministry document included that “5,048 cases of workplace harassment of women and violence against women were reported in the country in 2018 followed by 4,751 cases in 2019, 4,276 cases in 2020, and 2,078 cases in 2021.”
Nayab Gohar Jan, a prominent rights activist had earlier stated her stance by saying, “the whole process from the moment a crime is committed against a woman to registering it with the police — and then the court procedure — is structured in such a way that justice remains elusive.”
Rape is the most inhumane activity that a human can ever think of. Justice in these cases should be one of the priorities. Its perpetrators should not have any scope of escape. It’s an alarming situation for the whole world to modify the rules and regulations regarding the safety of the population who have the strength to nourish a human within a human.
