In her four decades-long career, Mamata Banerjee has changed many hats, but her socialist inclination always remained constant. Now, it appears that Mamata needs capitalists.
Well known for kicking out TATA from Bengal, she is forced to hobnob with the Adani group to save her sinking future.
Mamata meets GautamAdani
On Thursday, 3rd December 2021, Mamata Banerjee, held a meeting with businessman Gautam Adani. The meeting was held in Nabanna, the temporary State Secretariat of West Bengal.
According to the details available in the public domain, Mamata and Mr Adani discussed various subjects including investment opportunities in West Bengal. Sharing a photo of his meeting with Trinamool Congress (TMC) Supremo, Gautam Adani revealed his happiness over having Mamata Banerjee on board. He also expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) to be held in April 2022.

Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata’s nephew and TMC national general secretary is reported to have arranged this meeting. Mamata is trying to persuade industrialists to invest more in the economic potential of the state. In a statement, a senior official said, “The chief minister has started her homework early for the upcoming BGBS in April 2022. With this in mind, the chief minister had gone to Mumbai and met Adani Group (officials).”

The meeting is in line with Mamata’s meet-ups with various important leaders during the last 10 days.
First, she visited Delhi, where she met a vast swathe of people which include Prime Minister Modi as well. Followed by Mumbai, where she met heavyweights like Sharad Pawar and other prominent people of Maharashtra.
Anti-capitalist trying to use capitalists for her motive
Mamata’s surprise meeting is believed to be an indication of the fact that she is losing clout in her state. Due to her party’s incessant support to the violent Islamists and other anti-social elements in the state, businesses are refraining from investing in Bengal and existing economic opportunities are also witnessing a huge downfall.

However, Mamata has been a vocal opponent of capitalists throughout her life. In 2007, Mamata Banerjee had led a rhetorical revolt against the establishment of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nandigram. Similarly, in 2008, Ratan Tata had to remove his TATA Nano production line outside Singur. TATA had explicitly expressed frustration for the TMC Supremo’s anti-TATA stand.
When it comes to managing its subject, every socialist leader has to cater to a capitalist. A socialist agenda on its own always leads to violent clashes for resources, and the socialist leader is eventually toppled by the colleagues. Mamata seems to have realised this and so is now trying to persuade capitalists to save her fortunes.
