On Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a man identified as Shahzad alias Khadim for the alleged murder of a 24-year-old national-level Kho-Kho player following a failed rape attempt. The Opposition and left liberals made it a ‘casteist issue’ over social media but later decided to observe secular silence after realising that the rapist belonged to the islamic community.

The Heinous Crime
The police arrested the accused with the help of an audio clip shared by a friend of the victim, who was on call when the atrocious incident took place. After discovering a rope, a shirt with two missing buttons, and a slipper, police claim to have solved the murder of the national-level Kho-Kho player in Bijnor. Later the police revealed that Shahzad was addicted to smack, hash and alcohol.
“Shahzad, who also goes by Khadim, is a labourer and has confessed to his crime. He is married and has a two-month-old daughter. He knew she always took the route by the railway tracks to get home – it was shorter” Bijnor SP Dharamveer Singh said at a press briefing.
“On Friday, there was no work at the railway station. He took smack and was sitting by the pile of railway sleepers when the woman passed by around noon. In an attempt to rape her, he dragged her away. When she struggled, he panicked and strangled her with a rope. She died, he got scared and ran away.”
As per the police, the incident took place at around 2 pm on September 10, when the victim was returning home after giving a job interview.
The victim was on a call with a friend, tried to shout for help while the accused strangled her with her dupatta and a rope. The woman’s friend overheard her screaming for help on the phone before she fell silent. Her bruised body was later found in a pool of blood.

Minority Appeasement/ Political Motive
Shockingly, her demise was shamefully used by casteist groups for their political motives and for sparking hatred against the Hindu community. A crime against women or a national level kho-kho player wasn’t the concern for them; the Twitter warriors of the infamous Bhim Army made sure to make it an anti-Dalit agenda until they learnt that the murder accused belonged to the Muslim community.
Netizens took to Twitter to slam the so-called Dalit saviours; Ratan Sharda wrote: “Babli was a Dalit. “Poor” Shahzad was trying to force his “friendship” on her. But media tries to make it look as a druggie case. No noise. No #MeemBheem promoters speak up.”

It is indeed shameful that the opposition parties portrayed this heinous crime against a woman as a ‘casteist’ issue. However, after the criminal was identified as a Muslim, nobody spoke a word as they couldn’t afford to lose the vote bank politics based on minority appeasement.
