Congress is the political untouchable in Uttar Pradesh and BSP and SP decide to stay away from it

On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu ruled out the possibility of his party forming an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) in the upcoming UP state Assembly polls. Lallu confirmed that the Congress party would tie up only with smaller parties in the state, as per News agency PTI.

“The Congress’ stand on alliances is clear; we will forge alliances only with small parties. We will not even think about aligning again with big parties.” Ajay stated when asked about the Congress’s stand on alliances for the UP polls and if there was still a possibility of a tie-up with the SP and BSP.

With much confidence, Congress leader expressed that his party is all set for a “comeback” in UP, he further said that the earlier governments headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had “failed to live up to people’s trust.” He further talked about misrule under the non-Congress governments in the last 32 years; he said it is clear that “we will align with small parties” on the issues of the poor, farmers, youth and women’s security.

UP is the most important state for any political party, and Yogi Adityanath’s popularity in the state is very well known. Ironically, Lallu did not go into any proper details or information of the plan that Congress has in mind.

Stating the Congress as the “main challenger” to the BJP when Uttar Pradesh goes to the polls next year, Lallu said that his party is confident of forming the government in the state after contesting the elections under the “supervision” of Priyanka Gandhi, as she is the general secretary in-charge of the state and, the issue of the chief ministerial face will be taken by the national leadership.

“We are moving forward as a strong opposition force and under the leadership of Priyanka Gandhi we will win the polls, and form the government in 2022,” Lallu said.

Both the SP and BSP have also ruled out tying up with the Congress, with SP’s Akhilesh Yadav asserting the party will forge alliances only with small parties and Mayawati said that BSP would go solo in the upcoming polls. Lallu also claimed that portraying SP as the main challenger for the BJP for the 2022 polls was created by media and it was the Congress that was standing resolutely on the ground to take on the BJP.

Citing the examples of the Congress’ ‘BJP Gaddi Chhorho’ campaign and party leaders spending three days in gram panchayats and wards to hold a direct dialogue with about 90 lakh people last month, Lallu said that only one party is focused on training their members and constantly struggling on the ground and that is the Congress.

Back in 2017, the SP-Congress alliance along with Kishore as their strategist did not have a very pleasant experience in UP.  The Congress won just seven seats while its alliance partner SP bagged 47 seats in the 403-member assembly. The BJP won a thumping victory with 312 seats and the BSP bagged 19 seats. The lack of leadership in Congress is the reason why other parties parted ways with the age-old party.

After the Congress’s major downfall and based on the recent developments, not just other parties but also election strategist Kishore has been ignoring the Congress party’s requests on all grounds. Furthermore, the disappearance of Kishore from the UP elections clearly shows that he has subtly announced the return of the Yogi Government in Uttar Pradesh.
