A government-approved NGO in Jharkhand, which goes by the name Mother Teresa Welfare Trust has become the centre of sexual abuse, rape, molestation and torture of minor girls and young women. Two minor girls out of 40 inmates of the Mother Teresa Welfare Trust (MTWT) went missing in the course of shifting of children to another shelter home on Friday after the horrifying details of the Mother Teresa Welfare Trust were brought to light. The two inmates, 15 and 18-year-olds were recovered safely on Friday from Telco-based Mother Teresa Welfare Trust (MTWT) children’s home.
Earlier this month, an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of two minor girls at a children’s home run by Mother Teresa Welfare Trust (MTWT) has found that more girl inmates were being abused there for over four years. The criminalities of the Mother Teresa Welfare Trust were brought to light after two rescued girls from the shelter home on June 6 said they were physically and mentally tortured at the home and made to give in to the sexual demands of the perpetrators.
The girls, aged 16 and 17 then gave video-recorded statements in which they reiterated all the charges made in their statements to the special POCSO court. Accordingly, the police had registered an FIR under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code against Harpal Singh Thapar, director of the home, his wife Pushpa Rani Tirkey, who is also the chairperson of East Singhbhum district child welfare committee (CWC), warden Geeta Singh, her son Aditya Singh, and another staff member Tony Singh.

According to the Hindustan Times, the details of the crimes committed by the Mother Teresa Welfare Trust-run shelter home are horrifying. “Investigation has found that Thapar allegedly had physical relations with the 19-year-old daughter of the warden, and he, along with others, used to sexually abuse and exploit the woman on a regular basis,” Jamshedpur senior superintendent of police Dr M Tamil Vanan said.
India Today reported on Thursday that the absconding shelter home director, warden and two others facing charges of sexual assault on minors were nabbed in Madhya Pradesh and brought to Jamshedpur. According to reports, the Mother Teresa Welfare Trust is a Jharkhand government-approved NGO which has no links with Mother Teresa’s ‘Missionaries of Charity’. Mother Teresa Welfare Trust was being run for the last 10 years at Kharangajhar in Jamshedpur.
