Fake activist and climate vigilante, Licypriya Kangujam’s fugitive father has been arrested in a joint operation by the Delhi and Manipur Police. Kanarjit Kangujam, also known as Dr KK Singh, who is the father of teen climate activist Licypriya Kangujam had a Rs. 1 lakh bounty on his head, with the Manipur Police making it known that anyone providing information regarding the fugitive would be handsomely rewarded. In the name of the International Youth Committee (IYC), Singh had defrauded several national and international students by seeking funds from them.
KK Singh was arrested Monday for forgery and cheating following a complaint from a Nepalese student. Interestingly, many have pointed out how much of the rewards received by the fugitive’s daughter and climate vigilante Licypriya Kangujam are, in fact, from organisations her father was associated with, raising concerns that her claims may not be authentic.
Acting on the basis of a complaint filed by a Nepalese student, the Print reported that the ministry of External Affairs’ northern division took cognisance of one of these complaints, from Nepal, and forwarded the complaint to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), requesting that the “facts of the case may kindly be ascertained and action may be taken”.
Based on the complaint of the student, Manipur Police had lodged a case against Singh under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Earlier in 2015, the criminal was arrested in Manipur with charges of criminal case number 176 of 2015 under Section 420 (Fraud), 324 (Assault) and 406 (Criminal breach of trust).
However, subsequent to him being granted bail, Singh absconded and went into hiding in Delhi. Singh had procured a number of several fake documents and signatures, using which he showcased himself as a prominent personality, handling international schemes. Through several seminars, the fugitive extorted crores of rupees in the name of helping the families of those killed in the earthquakes.
Singh was declared a fugitive by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East on 25 April 2016. It has been alleged that Singh uses his daughter as a front to further his own nefarious agenda – which most of the time involves duping, scamming and impersonating people. With investigations going on in full swing, the truth promises to come out of the closet very soon.
