On 17 March 2017 Nissanka made his List A debut for Hambantota District in the 2016–17 Districts One Day Tournament. On 24 February 2018 he made his 20-20 debut for Badureliya Sports Club in the 2017–18 SLC Twenty20 Tournament.
In domestic cricket he plays for Badureliya Sports Club, Nondescripts Cricket Club and Hambantota District Team.
In January 2019, he was selected in Sri Lanka A’s squad for the first-class series in which match was played against Ireland A. On 21 March 2021 he made his international test debut in which match was played against West Indies. On 10 March 2021 he made his debut in one day international in which match was played against West Indies. On 3 March 2021 he made his debut in T20I in which match was played against West Indies.

Pathum Nissanka Started his cricket career when he was in Kalutara Vidyalaya. He scored unbeaten double century of 205 runs in 190 balls in his School Cricket Championship in which match was played against President’s College, Rajagiriya at Colts ground, Colombo.
