‘We did not do it,’ the efforts to salvage the image of the rioters is underway but is futile

After creating anarchical scenes across the national capital on Republic Day, resulting in close to 400 Delhi Police personnel sustaining injuries, the protesting farmers’ unions are behaving like they never had anything to do with the violence, and were instead caught in between anti-social elements and a grand ‘government conspiracy’. But here’s the deal – we have been shouting for the past several months at the top of our choices that Khalistanis have not only infiltrated the farmers’ protests but also hijacked them. That the unions did not pay heed to such assertions and went about dreaming away in their own egotistical La la land is purely their own fault.

And look at what the farmer unions have now been reduced to. From pledging to returning to their states with nothing but a complete repeal of the farm reforms passed by Parliament last year, they are now entirely focussing their energies on blaming each other for the violence which was perpetrated on the streets of Delhi this Tuesday. While the unions might be of the opinion that they can win back some of the support which they lost after Republic Day, Delhi Police and the Home Ministry, armed with agencies, will nevertheless make life hell for their leaders here on.

When the protestors engaged in unprecedented violence, they crossed a line – the costs of which they will now have to pay, come what may. Blaming the jaats of Haryana or some smaller kisan unions, or apologising for their behaviour is not going to in any manner dilute the prospects of the main anarchists being held by the neck and dragged to jail.

Not only do the protestors now have various law enforcing agencies coming after them, but also the general public which has seen first-hand the anti-social and anti-national motivations of the alleged “anna daatas”. As a matter of fact, scores of common citizens descended upon Singhu border to protest against the anarchists blockading the crucial road for over two months now.

This shows how the violence of Republic Day, perpetrated by the protestors, has annoyed common citizens, who are now willing to take to the streets themselves in order to send across a resounding message that they and their city cannot be taken to ransom by every other Tom, Dick and Harry. Effectively, the anarchical agitators are now surrounded from all sides, contrary to their belief of having the national capital surrounded by them. Now, the ball is purely in their court. Whether they want to return to their home states or want to be kicked out of the protest sites is solely for them to decide.
