Lalu Yadav’s RJD has agreed to ally with the Communist Party of India (CPI) if Kanhaiya Kumar does not contest in the upcoming assembly election in Bihar. In the 2019 general election, Kanhaiya Kumar was the reason behind the break of deal between RJD and CPI as Lalu Yadav saw Kumar as a potential rival to his sons. RJD refused to not contest the Begusarai seat from where Kumar was contesting but gave a free pass to CPI-ML candidate from Ara constituency.
This time CPI’s leadership has agreed to sacrifice Kumar in order to ally with Lalu Yadav led RJD. Lalu Yadav needs allies as Jitan Ram Manjhi of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) has already left the alliance. But he agreed to ally with Communist parties on the condition that Kumar will neither participate in election nor campaign for non-CPI candidates.
“Kanhaiya ji has not spoken to the media for the last four months. But I am 110 percent sure that he will not be contesting the polls in Bihar,” said Kumar’s close aide Saroj Kumar.
Kumar’s ‘anti-national’ image is a liability for any party and he had to face public’s anger many times in the past during rallies. “CPI leaders privately admit that Kumar’s ‘tukde-tukde’ gang image won’t help the party and many also resent the fact that several CPI leaders were sidelined and replaced by JNU-affiliated people during campaigning in Begusarai,” said a RJD leader.
So, Lalu Yadav has been able to finish Kanhaiya Kumar’s political career as far as Bihar’s politics is concerned. Sitting in jail, the mass leader cracked a deal with CPI which will clear the way for his sons in Bihar’s politics. On the other hand, Kanhaiya Kumar is lying low since the Kejriwal government sanctioned his prosecution in sedition case for raising anti-national slogans in JNU in 2016 which brought the students from the university in limelight.
Kumar lost by more than 4 lakh votes to BJP candidate Giriraj Singh despite the fact that he contested from CPI stronghold of Begusarai and since then CPI cadres as well as other parties see him as a liability. However, Lalu Yadav still has insecurity for his sons and therefore he wanted to eliminate any possible competition for his sons in Bihar’s politics. Now, by allying with Communist parties, he has prevented the split of ‘secular votes’ as well ended Kumar’s careers in Bihar politics.
Moreover, he has got thousands of Communist party karyakartas who will fill in RJD’s lack of cadre. Lalu Yadav’s party has a very strong social base of Yadav and Muslims voters but lacks cadre while CPI and CPI-ML has thousands of dedicated workers in many districts of Bihar. Therefore, the only party which is going to benefit from this deal is RJD.
