Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it very clear that the government will not soften its stance on illegal immigrants in India. He said that National Register of Citizens (NRC) as the one in progress in Assam, will be brought in other states and the infiltrators will be identified and deported from every inch of the country.
While speaking in Rajya Sabha, Amit Shah reminded the house about the manifesto of the BJP and clarified the government’s stand on the issue of illegal immigrants. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai informed the upper house of the parliament about the measures the government is taking to curb illegal migration in the country.
“Currently, the NRC is a part of Assam Accord. The Centre – as per its election manifesto – is dedicated to weaning out illegal immigrants from every inch of this country. We will make sure that all such immigrants are deported as per international law,” said Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As per a news report by All India Radio, the measures Rai promised include ‘erection of fencing on international boundary, enhanced vigil by border guarding forces as well as use of technology for border guarding and smart fencing.’

As president of BJP, Amit Shah had promised that each and every illegal Bangladeshi immigrant who was living in India would be sent back to his country. These actions show that the BJP government in the centre and state is taking a hard stance and will not bow down to the whims of other political parties who have decided to woo illegal immigrants for votes. Most illegal immigrants in India are from Bangladesh and the deportations of Bangladeshi immigrants shall deter further infiltrations in the porous border between India and Bangladesh.
Previously, Ministry of Home Affairs has said that it will assist the Assam government in setting up of 1,000 tribunals where people can contest their exclusion from the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The foreigners’ tribunals will be equipped with legal staff and 40.7 lakh people who have been left out from the list, hence at the risk of being declared illegal immigrants, could make their claims for citizenship at the tribunal. The list was published on July 30, 2018, and the target date to release the final list of citizens is July 2019. The tribunals will require nearly 12,000 officials including 1,000 legal officials and legal staff to preside over them.
Amit Shah’s remarks have been welcomed by many. It’s no hidden secret that a large number of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are living in India, which takes a heavy toll on the resources of the country. The large numbers of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants also pose a huge security threat to the nation. These illegal immigrants are helped by a large number of people belonging to a particular section of the community, ideology and politics to suit their own ends. A large number of people in India are helping Bangladeshi nationals to enter India and help them acquire citizenship without hassle which apart from being illegal is changing the demography of the country. These people are driven by religious and political motives who use these illegal immigrants as their vote banks and for other nefarious agendas of their own. From Assam and Bangladesh to Karnataka and Kerala, the entry of illegal immigrants has found little hindrances in the past decades. Amit Shah seeks to make an intervention on this gross violation of Indian laws.
