The assets of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), worth 4,500 crore rupees is on the radar of government authorities after the inspector generals and district magistrates were given the powers to detain and arrest members of the banned outfit. The governor led administration has sent orders to officials of 22 districts of Jammu & Kashmir to arrest the people related to the controversial socio-political organisation. Jamaat-e-Islami is a separatist outfit which has supported secession of Kashmir and its merger with Pakistan. “It is the main organisation responsible for propagation of separatist and radical ideology in the Kashmir valley. The group is also responsible for formation of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM),” said a Ministry of Home Affairs official.
So far the government has arrested 350 members of Jamaat-e-Islami. It has also led to a crackdown on JeI functionaries operating 400 schools, 350 mosques and 1000 seminaries across the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The properties of the organization run in hundreds of crores but the attachment of these properties would not be immediate. “The district magistrate would get an inventory made by the police. Then depending on investigation another inventory would be made to ascertain whether the properties are legal or illegal. The total estimated properties could be well over Rs 4,500 crore. So far the order entails the arrest under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967,” said a government official.
The members of JeI could also be booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) or Section 151 CrPC (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences) if needed. “We will also have to verify if their functionary was already out on bail and can be booked again and the grounds and evidence needed to arrest him,” added the official. Abdul Hamid Fayaz, Zahid Ali, Mudasir Ahmad, Ghulam Qadir are the top leaders of JeI who were picked from various places like Tral, Anantnag and Budgam.
It is a well-known secret that Jamaat-e-Islami is in close contact with militant outfits and is supporting extremism and militancy in J&K. Moreover, JeI has been an active part of separatist groups & terrorist organisation fighting for the claims for secession of Kashmir. The notification further pointed out the nefarious intent of the shady organisation and stated that JeI’s “activities and articulations intended to disrupt the territorial integrity of India.”
If strict actions were not taken by the Union Government, Jamaat-e-Islami would have continued advocating secession of J&K from the Union of India. Mentioning the fact, the report stated, “JeI propagate anti-national and separatist sentiments prejudicial to integrity and security of the country, escalate secessionist movements, support militancy and incite violence.”
Jamaat-e-Islami, an orthodox organization, has a motive of establishing an Islamic order in India. Officially, the organisation describes its objective as “Iqaamat-e-Deen” or “Establishment of (Islamic) way of life in all aspects of life” with “achievement of divine pleasure and success in the Hereafter” as the sole motive of the effort. Its core doctrine is “La Ilaha Illallahu Muhammadur Rasulullah”, i.e. “the Divine Being is solely Allah, there being no God except Him, and that Muhammad is Allah’s messenger.”
According to the India Today report, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is a part of the pan-Islamic movement and draws its inspiration from the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt, the Fidayan-e-Islam of Iran and the Darul-Islam of Indonesia. In 1954, its many leaders were detained under the Preventive Detention Act. The organization was also banned during the emergency for their communal and inflammatory politics.
