It is an open secret that Mamata’s electoral success in the state of West Bengal has been due to blatant Islamic appeasement that manifests itself in making West Bengal a safe haven for illegal immigrants crossing over from Bangladesh. A furor has been created over Assam’s National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) that seeks to rid the state of illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh which has disrupted the demographics of the state for the last several decades and has also led to social discord at times. The opposition has however been restive about the entire issue and has tried blaming the government and has even questioned its intention.
At the forefront of this politically motivated outrage by the opposition has been West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. She has been the most aggressive in criticism as well. In a clear threat of aggravating things, she said that the NRC for Assam would lead to a civil war in the country. She stated that, “The NRC is being done with a political motive. We will not let this happen. They (BJP) are trying to divide the people. The situation cannot be tolerated. There will be a civil war, bloodbath in the country.” It is beyond comprehension how an attempt by a country to rid itself of unwarranted and illegal immigrants can have such consequences. The fact remains that this is a Supreme Court-monitored exercise and as such there is no infirmity or illegality in the entire action. The exercise to identify Indian citizens living in Assam rejected the applications of 40 lakh applicants only in accordance with the due process. Mamata’s warning of a bloodbath and civil war is not a prophecy rather it is a war cry, a threat of sorts. She has been badly disturbed by the Assam government’s action of taking her vote bank to task and now she is doing everything she can to keep them intact.
The suspicion of Mamata Banerjee trying to protect the illegal immigrants and make matters worse by invoking a civil war is corroborated by the fact that she held a press conference soon after Assam NRC’s final draft was released by central and state government officials and announced that she will provide shelter to the illegal immigrants identified in Assam’ NRC and allow them to stay in West Bengal. This makes it clear that she cares for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants more than the rights of the indigenous Indians and the nation’s sovereign rights which extend to sending back those who have infiltrated into the country. If she actually takes this horrible step it would amount to a gross abuse of the process of law. When a Supreme Court monitored-NRC has clearly identified these illegal immigrants no one should point a finger at it leave alone the question of even daring to offer them to stay within the territory of India. West Bengal is an inseparable and integral part of India, Mamata Banerjee should stop thinking of herself as a Mughal-styled emperor who can do anything she wants without any regard for the country’s interests whatsoever.
Criticisng the NRC, the West Bengal chief minister also stated, “If Bengalis say Biharis can’t stay in Bengal, South Indian people say North Indians can’t stay there and North Indians say South Indians can’t stay here. What will be state of this country? Because we are together, our country is a family.”

It is preposterous how she is comparing Indians with Bangladeshis. No one has a problem with any Indian moving to or residing in any state. In fact, this is guaranteed by the Constitution of India and it is not an uncommon practice in India to move around to any province without any hindrance whatsoever. Mamata Banerjee is unabashedly trying to mislead the public about this. Those who have been identified in Assam are not Indian natives belonging to some other province or region but illegal migrants belonging to Bangladesh. This analogy is poor, illogical and made with a view to mislead the general public.
