Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP, Derek O’ Brien has again misused the privileges meant for the MPs. Derek O’ Brien targeted a common citizen Rishi Bagree threatening to name and shame him inside the Parliament through his twitter account. Derek’s behaviour is not surprising as he is showing glimpses of the type of politics he has learnt from his party leader Mamata Banerjee. But this is shameful behaviour coming from someone who has been chosen to represent the people of his state. Derek O’ Brien is prone to such outbursts as was exhibited by him just a couple of days back when he targeted lawyer Prashant Patel in the Rajya Sabha. Two successive lapses from Derek O’ Brien hint towards the type of politics being played in Bengal where even common people are not safe.

Rishi Bagree had tweeted, that Omar Abdullah the National Conference leader from Jammu and Kashmir would welcome Mamata Banerjee as a presidential candidate. The tweet from Rishi Bagree came after a prominent news channel had hinted towards such a development having indeed taken place. Derek O’ Brien lost no time in making this a targeted attack on the social media user and he did what exactly any TMC leader excels in doing, accuse. The central government needs to bring about some amendments to put a cap on these privileges enjoyed by the MPs. People like Derek who take undue advantage of these privileges should also be severely reprimanded. The freedom to speak without hindrance must not be used to tarnish the image of others, it is not proper justice if one can get away with whatever he/she speaks.
Earlier, Derek had targeted Lawyer Prashant Patel inside the parliament. Prashant Patel is a young and fearless advocate, he is best known for his petition which inspired Election Commission to take action against 21 AAP MLAs for holding the office of profit. He has been a huge headache for the anti-India elements. Speaking to Opindia, the young advocate said he was targeted because he is continuously exposing communist-Naxal gang and their lies’. He also claimed that TMC party was attacking him on behalf of AAP whom he has been fighting. Prashant Patel said he has also received death threats and now his opponents are especially targeting him to launch a two-sided attack on him, both on social media and outside. He claimed that his opponents cannot counter him logically and legally so now they are trying their level best to silence his voice.
A parliamentarian enjoys immunity from proceedings in any court in respect of anything said by him/her on the floor of the House. MP’s enjoy complete protection even if the words used by them in the house are derogatory, false and malicious in nature. Opposition MPs especially those from TMC like Derek misuse this privilege to attack private citizens. Much before he had targeted Rishi Bagree or lawyer Prashant Patel, Derek O’Brien had also attacked OpIndia co-founder, Rahul Raj. These MPs do not realize that by their stupid jibes aimed towards the common citizens they are setting the wrong precedence and are also coming across as weak.
