A fresh political and academic controversy has erupted after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the Centre over its inquiry into university courses that include Jyotirao Phule’s Gulamgiri, a work containing deeply derogatory references to Brahma. Gandhi argued that the government was attempting to restrict independent thought, while the controversy has focused attention on what students are being taught in institutions of higher education.

On September 30, Gandhi posted on social media attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government over the Ministry of Education seeking information from central universities about certain courses. He alleged that the government was opposed to social justice and equality and claimed that the education system was being used to discourage students from questioning established ideas.

The immediate trigger was a communication issued by the Department of Higher Education on September 27. According to the report, the Ministry asked central universities to provide comments regarding a social-media post and disclose enrolment figures for courses mentioned in that post. The communication reportedly referred to a request received from the Prime Minister’s Office and marked the matter as urgent.

The dispute centres partly on Gulamgiri, or Slavery, written by 19th-century social reformer Jyotirao Phule. The book is a significant work in the history of anti-caste thought, but passages concerning Hindu religious traditions and deities have also attracted criticism. Among the figures discussed in provocative terms is Brahma, one of the principal deities associated with Hindu traditions.

Supporters of Gandhi’s position have framed the issue as one involving academic freedom and access to writings associated with social reform. Gandhi specifically cited Annihilation of Caste by Dr B. R. Ambedkar and Phule’s Gulamgiri while arguing that such works should remain available for students to study and debate. His criticism followed the Centre’s request for information from universities rather than an announced nationwide ban on the books.

The controversy has nevertheless raised a different question: where should universities draw the line between studying historically significant texts and presenting disputed or offensive claims without sufficient context? Critics of the material argue that passages involving Brahma and other Hindu figures can be deeply insulting to believers when taught without historical explanation or competing perspectives.

The original social-media discussion that prompted the government communication reportedly highlighted several courses and academic themes, including patriarchy, caste, the critique of Brahminism and the history of social structures. The account that raised the issue described these subjects as ideological material being introduced to young students. Those characterisations represent the views of the account involved and are not independently established as a description of all university teaching.

For universities, the episode highlights the complexity of teaching controversial literature. Academic institutions routinely study works that contain arguments, language or historical interpretations that may offend contemporary audiences. The challenge is ensuring that students understand the context in which such works were produced, the author’s purpose, the historical debate surrounding them and the criticisms they have generated.

The controversy also reflects a broader political argument over how India’s history and social divisions should be taught. Phule’s writings emerged from his opposition to caste hierarchy, while Ambedkar’s works remain central to debates about equality and social justice. At the same time, critics contend that educational discussions of caste should not come at the cost of disparaging religious traditions or communities.

The reference to Brahma has become particularly contentious because the deity occupies an important place within Hindu religious thought. Whether a passage is studied as historical literature, social criticism or religious commentary can significantly influence how students understand it. This has intensified demands from critics for greater transparency about university syllabi and reading lists.

Gandhi, meanwhile, has presented the government’s intervention as evidence of an attempt to suppress independent thinking. His argument is that students should be exposed to influential works and allowed to question prevailing social structures. The government communication, as reported, requested information and comments from central universities; it did not itself announce that the books were prohibited.

The dispute therefore extends beyond a single book. It touches upon academic freedom, religious sensitivity, historical interpretation and the responsibilities of universities when assigning controversial texts. The question of how Brahma is discussed in such literature is only one part of a larger debate about whether students should encounter provocative historical arguments directly, and what contextual safeguards should accompany them.

For students, teachers and universities, the controversy is likely to keep attention focused on syllabus transparency. Courses dealing with caste, religion and social reform inevitably involve difficult and contested material. Providing students with multiple perspectives, historical context and clear distinctions between an author’s claims and established facts can help ensure that academic discussion remains rigorous.

At the centre of the dispute is therefore not simply a reference to Brahma, but a much wider argument about what India’s universities should teach and how controversial works should be presented. As the Ministry examines the information sought from central universities, the debate over academic freedom and religious sensitivity is likely to continue, with both questions remaining significant for India’s higher-education system.
