Penguin Random House India finds itself at the centre of another politically charged publishing controversy, this time over Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s memoir — a row that has revived memories of the publisher’s earlier entanglement in the General M.M. Naravane book controversy earlier this year.
Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, traces her journey from a childhood in post-war Italy through her romance with Rajiv Gandhi at Cambridge to the personal tragedies that shaped her life and her relationship with her adopted country. Knopf, the Penguin Random House imprint handling the international edition, has confirmed a global release for November 10.
The trouble is with the Indian edition. Reports emerged that the publisher had withdrawn from releasing the memoir in India after Gandhi reportedly rejected proposed editorial changes. Penguin Random House India has disputed the framing of a withdrawal, maintaining that it remained willing and keen to publish the book while declining to discuss the confidential details of its exchanges with the author. According to one account of the dispute, the row erupted after a report said Penguin India had sought changes and deletions to parts of the manuscript, which Sonia did not accept.
Congress leaders have been quick to allege political pressure. Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot questioned publicly why Penguin was ready to publish the book worldwide but wanted changes for the Indian edition. Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi went further, calling Penguin’s clarification a weak statement and pointing out that the same publishing house has had no hesitation printing books tied to the RSS or the government, framing this as evidence that the publisher was, in his words, now afraid of the ruling establishment.
Penguin, for its part, has cast the dispute as a routine editorial matter rather than a political one — describing it as ordinary fact-checking and recommendations to the author rather than a refusal to publish. Complicating matters, reports have surfaced of an Indian e-commerce listing showing the book under a HarperCollins UK imprint, hinting that rights for the Indian market may already be shifting elsewhere, although this remains unconfirmed by any formal announcement. What’s clear is that the substance of the disputed passages — reportedly touching on the Galwan standoff with China, among other sensitive subjects — has not been made public, leaving the underlying claims of political interference unproven for now.
A familiar pattern: the Naravane memoir controversy
This is not the first time this year that Penguin has been dragged into a politically explosive book row. Earlier in 2026, the publisher found itself caught between the Congress and the government over former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s unpublished memoir, Four Stars of Destiny, which reportedly touched on the 2020 Galwan clash with China.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi cited the unpublished book in the Lok Sabha, alleging it revealed that Naravane had been left without political backing at a critical moment during the standoff, and claimed the book was already circulating publicly on platforms like Amazon. Penguin flatly denied this, issuing a statement that no copies of the book in print or digital form have been published, distributed, sold, or otherwise made available to the public. Rahul Gandhi rejected the publisher’s account outright, telling reporters that either Penguin or the former Army chief was lying, and that both could not be right, adding that he trusted Naravane’s version over the publisher’s.
The dispute paralysed Parliament for over a week, with the opposition pressing to discuss the book’s contents and the government resisting. It escalated further after Delhi Police registered an FIR over the alleged circulation of the memoir’s contents on social media and online platforms. Naravane eventually broke his silence, dismissing the swirling claims and telling reporters the country should look ahead rather than dwell on the past, while publicly countering the opposition’s characterisation of the Galwan events. Commentators at the time noted that the controversy had also turned scrutiny onto Penguin itself, with questions raised about how excerpts of an unpublished, uncleared manuscript had reportedly reached media platforms at all.
Why Penguin keeps ending up in the crossfire
Taken together, the two episodes point to a recurring bind for India’s most prominent English-language publisher: books touching on the Congress, the Gandhi family, the government, or sensitive national-security episodes like Galwan have repeatedly turned Penguin’s editorial and release decisions into political battlegrounds. In both cases, the publisher has insisted its actions — fact-checking, withholding an unreleased manuscript — were standard editorial process, while political actors on opposing sides have accused it, at different moments, of caving to pressure from the government and of stalling inconvenient truths. With the international edition of Sonia Gandhi’s memoir still on track for November and the Indian release in limbo, Penguin looks set to remain at the centre of the argument for some time yet.
