Jadavpur University, long seen as a Left bastion in Bengal’s student politics, woke on Thursday to the aftermath of a confrontation that began the previous evening and continued into the early hours. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-leaning student groups clashed on campus, several students were injured, and some were taken to hospital. What started around a general body meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) quickly turned into a tense night.
According to university sources cited by The Times of India, the disagreement surrounding the FETSU general body meeting escalated late on Wednesday. As tempers rose, students from opposing camps gathered on campus. Aurobindo Bhavan, the university’s administrative building, was locked as the situation became increasingly tense. University sources also said fires were allegedly set at several places during the early hours of Thursday.
By morning, the campus had become a place of competing accusations. ABVP alleged that members of Left student organisations, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and DSO-DSF, had provoked confrontations under the cover of the FETSU meeting. Left-leaning groups rejected the charge and accused ABVP of bringing outsiders into the university and engaging in vandalism. Both sides presented themselves as victims, while responsibility for particular acts remained disputed.
For a university that has historically been a Left bastion, the arrival of a stronger ideological contest has changed the character of student politics. Jadavpur has long had a reputation for political engagement, argument and activism. But there is a significant difference between a heated political debate and a confrontation in which students are injured. Once a campus reaches that point, ideology becomes less important than the immediate need to restore safety and trust.
The human cost of such clashes is easy to overlook when political slogans dominate the conversation. Behind the rival banners are students who have classes to attend, examinations to prepare for and academic work to complete. A student injured in a late-night confrontation is not merely a participant in a political dispute; that person is also someone’s child, classmate and friend. For families, reports of violence at a university can be deeply unsettling. That concern is especially sharp on a campus long identified as a Left bastion.
Keeping a politically active campus open to competing viewpoints requires more than locking buildings when tensions rise. Authorities must prevent rival groups from turning institutional spaces into battlegrounds while protecting legitimate student meetings and political expression. That balance becomes difficult when each side blames the other.
ABVP announced a protest on campus, while the SFI said it would organise a rally near the 8B bus stand. ABVP functionary Shubhabrata Adhikari said people from outside the university were involved and that FIRs were being lodged. Left student groups continued to deny the allegations. The competing protests suggest that the political temperature around the university is unlikely to fall immediately.
The episode is particularly significant because Jadavpur’s image as a Left bastion is being tested by a more competitive political environment. A university does not lose its democratic character because new political voices emerge. Ideological diversity can make student politics more vibrant. The danger begins when disagreement is settled through intimidation, vandalism or violence rather than debate.
For students, however, the argument is simpler. They need to know that they can walk across campus without being caught in someone else’s political fight. They need classrooms, laboratories, libraries and hostels to remain places where academic life can continue. A university’s political history may be important, but its first responsibility is to its students. That principle matters whether Jadavpur remains a Left bastion or becomes more politically divided.
Jadavpur University’s identity as a Left bastion was built over decades, but its future will depend on whether it can preserve political dissent without allowing violence to become normal. The latest clash should therefore be treated neither as a victory for one camp nor as a defeat for another, including those who see the campus chiefly through its Left bastion legacy. It should be seen as a warning. If competing student organisations genuinely want influence, they must demonstrate that they can argue fiercely, organise openly and still respect the safety of those who disagree with them.
