Speculations about a possible merger between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress have intensified in political circles over the past few days. These discussions gained further momentum after TMC chief Mamata Banerjee met senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, followed by a nearly one-hour-long meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Abhishek Banerjee.
However, after these meetings, both parties have dismissed reports of any merger.
Sources in the TMC clearly stated that no proposal for merging the party with the Congress was ever placed, nor was there any discussion on the matter. The party described such reports as mere rumours and baseless. The Congress also clarified that the meetings between leaders were focused on courtesy exchanges and issues related to opposition unity, and not any organisational merger.
It is being reported that discussions during the meeting included the political situation in West Bengal, better coordination among opposition parties, and future strategies against the BJP. In addition, deliberations were also held on strengthening the opposition alliance keeping the 2029 general elections in mind.
The TMC, in its post-meeting statement, said that both sides remain committed to working together for democratic values, protection of the Constitution, and public interest. The party also emphasised the unity of the “INDIA” alliance.
Thus, for now, the speculation about a TMC-Congress merger has been put to rest by both parties. As things stand, the meetings between leaders are being described as efforts to enhance opposition cooperation and political coordination, while talks of a merger have been officially denied.
