A familiar face in Hyderabad’s IPL stands, Kavya Maran, CEO of Sunrisers Hyderabad, known for her spirited presence on the field cheering her team recently found herself at the center of controversy after signing Pakistani cricketer Abrar Ahmed for another franchise she owns, sparking widespread criticism and social media outrage across India.
The incident has put Kavya Maran, a scion of the influential Maran family of Tamil Nadu, in the spotlight not just for her cricketing decisions but also for the complex intersection of sports, politics, and public perception in India. As debates rage online, all eyes are now on her next move and whether this controversy will have any lasting impact on her IPL franchise and personal reputation.
Who is Kavya Maran?
Kavya Maran is the daughter of Kalanidhi Maran, chairman of the Sun Group and a prominent businessman. Kalanidhi Maran is the founder and chairman of Sun TV Network, considered the largest TV network in South India. He also owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL team.
Apart from media, the Marans are involved in film production through Sun Pictures, which mainly produces South Indian films. They have also had direct stakes and control in the aviation company SpiceJet.
Maran Family: South India’s Powerful Business-Political Dynasty
The Maran family is one of the most prestigious business and political families in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, wielding significant influence over politics for decades.
Kalanidhi Maran is the grandnephew of M Karunanidhi, the founder of DMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, making him a close relative of current CM MK Stalin.
Kalanidhi’s brother, Dayanidhi Maran, Kavya’s uncle, is a senior DMK leader and was the Union Minister for Communications and IT from 2004–2007 under the Manmohan Singh government. He is currently the MP from Chennai South.
Kavya’s grandfather and other family members have also held key political positions in DMK and the central government. In short, Kavya Maran belongs to one of Tamil Nadu’s most influential families with deep roots in both politics and business.
Why Controversy Over a Pakistani Player?
The current controversy surrounds Kavya Maran’s decision to buy Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed for her franchise Sunrisers Leeds in the British tournament The Hundred.
Many fans, including supporters of Sunrisers Hyderabad, are unhappy with this decision. Critics question why a player who allegedly mocked the Indian Army and the Pulwama attack has been signed, wondering what compulsion led to this decision.
This has led to criticism on social media, with hashtags like #BoycottSRH trending. Although the BCCI has not commented, since The Hundred is organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it has no authority over participating teams or players.
However, all eyes remain on Kavya Maran and Sunrisers, will Abrar Ahmed continue with the team, or will he be shown the exit like Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman?
