In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Indian tennis icon Leander Paes has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, adding considerable public visibility to the party’s campaign efforts in a fiercely contested state.
Paes was formally inducted into the BJP in New Delhi yesterday in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and party MP Sukanta Majumdar, signalling a deliberate move by the party to bring influential national figures into its fold as electoral momentum builds.
A sporting legacy invoked in a political welcome
Welcoming Paes, Rijiju drew attention to the tennis star’s historic bronze medal win at the 1996 Barcelona Olympics, describing it as a turning point in India’s global sporting identity. He noted that at a time when India struggled for Olympic recognition, Paes’s achievement ensured the country’s presence on the international medal tally.
Rijiju also recalled Paes’s face-off with American tennis great Andre Agassi during the same Olympics. He said it was difficult to watch Paes compete while injured, ultimately losing to Agassi, who went on to secure the gold medal. The minister framed Paes’s resilience as a defining trait, suggesting that his transition into politics would reflect the same commitment to national service.
A calculated entry ahead of a crucial election
Paes’s induction comes at a strategically important moment, with West Bengal emerging as a key battleground for the BJP. The party has been working to consolidate its position in the state, aiming for a breakthrough in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The move follows Paes’s recent meeting with BJP leader Nitin Nabin in Kolkata, which had fuelled speculation about his political alignment. His entry into the BJP now confirms those indications and adds a high-profile face to the party’s outreach efforts.
This development also marks a shift in Paes’s political journey. He had joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and campaigned for the party during the Goa Assembly elections in 2022, although he did not contest.
Star power and electoral optics
Paes’s induction reflects a broader BJP strategy of integrating recognisable public figures to enhance its connection with voters. In a state like West Bengal, where political narratives are deeply competitive, the inclusion of a celebrated sports personality is likely to carry both symbolic and strategic weight.
Beyond his sporting credentials, Paes brings national recognition and a reputation built over decades, factors that can help the party broaden its appeal, particularly among younger and urban voters.
As campaigning for the 2026 elections gathers pace, Paes’s transition from the tennis court to the political arena signals more than a personal shift. It highlights the intensifying contest for influence in West Bengal, where every addition to a party’s ranks is calibrated to electoral outcomes.
