Supreme Court Directs Netflix to Rename ‘Ghooskhor Pandit’

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Netflix and filmmaker Neeraj Pandey to change the title of the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandit and submit a new name after objections were raised that the title was offensive to a section of society.

As per reports, a bench hearing the matter observed that filmmakers cannot insult any community in the name of creative freedom. The court, while hearing a PIL filed by Atul Mishra, observed that such titles are often picked for publicity and to spark controversy.

The court cautioned against the use of provocative names for publicity and said, “You cannot insult any section of society by using such a title. This is against morality and public order.”

The court made it clear that the film will not be allowed to release until the revised title is placed on record. It also directed Pandey to file an affidavit confirming that the film does not intend to insult or demean any social group. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 19.

How the Controversy Began

The controversy started on February 3, 2026, when Netflix released the teaser of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer. The title immediately drew criticism from members of the Brahmin community, who objected to the use of the word “Pandit,” traditionally associated with scholars and priests alongside “Ghooskhor,” meaning corrupt.

Protests were reported in several cities, and complaints were filed alleging that the film’s title damages the dignity of the community. Mumbai-based lawyer Ashutosh Dubey also issued a legal notice to Netflix, arguing that linking a respected term with corruption was irresponsible and defamatory.

In the teaser, Bajpayee plays Senior Inspector Ajay Dixit, nicknamed “Pandit” in Delhi. The character is portrayed as a disgraced police officer who has faced repeated demotions over a 20-year career. Petitioners argue that this portrayal reinforces negative stereotypes and deliberately targets a particular caste identity.

The filmmakers have not issued a detailed public response so far but are expected to comply with the court’s order and submit a revised title.

Court’s Observations

In its remarks, the bench emphasized the limits of free speech under the Constitution.

“Why should you denigrate anybody. It’s against morality and public order. Being woke is one thing. But creating this kind of unrest when there is already unrest in the country. We thought filmmakers, journalists, etc., were all responsible people and were aware of exceptions and reasonable restrictions of Article 19 (1) (a) (Fundamental Right of Speech and Expression). You tell us what names you are suggesting for the title change. Issue notice to the respondents. No section of society should be denigrated. If you use your freedom to denigrate any section of society, we can’t permit it”, Justice Nagarathna reportedly remarked.

The bench warned that the Court cannot allow any section of society to be denigrated either by the film’s title or by any offensive material in the film, if any.

Legal experts note that although freedom of expression is constitutionally protected, it is subject to reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order and decency. The Supreme Court’s intervention highlights the judiciary’s readiness to step in when community sensitivities are raised.

Earlier, the Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha in Jaipur strongly opposed the film’s title, stating that the issue goes beyond cinema or entertainment. In Bhopal, members of the Brahmin community staged street protests against the film and its title.

A Public Interest Litigation has also been filed in the Delhi High Court challenging the title. Following the backlash, Netflix took down the teaser and promotional material.

About the Film

The film revolves around a corrupt police officer whose plans for a profitable night take an unexpected turn when he finds a severely injured girl thrown from a moving car in Delhi. The incident pulls him into an international conspiracy.

Directed by Ritesh Shah, the film stars Manoj Bajpayee, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, Shraddha Das, and Divya Dutta, among others.

The final decision on the film’s release will depend on the revised title and the Supreme Court’s assessment at the next hearing scheduled for February 19.
