India’s indigenous light combat aircraft Tejas Mk1A has achieved a major operational milestone by successfully clearing its full air-to-air missile envelope, following multiple live firings of the indigenously developed Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range (BVR) missile and the UK-origin ASRAAM within-visual-range (WVR) missile.
The successful trials confirm that the Tejas Mk1A is now fully configured for both long-range and close-combat aerial engagements, significantly enhancing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) air combat capability at a time of increasing regional aerial threats.
According to defence sources, the missile firings validated weapon integration, avionics compatibility, radar cueing, seeker performance, and endgame accuracy across diverse engagement profiles. The results mark the completion of a critical phase in the Mk1A’s weapons certification process, bringing the aircraft closer to full operational deployment with frontline squadrons.

With the Astra Mk1 providing long-range interception capability and ASRAAM ensuring high lethality in dogfight scenarios, the Tejas Mk1A now offers a credible, multi-layered air dominance package. This configuration allows the aircraft to engage enemy fighters across the entire spectrum of air combat—from beyond visual range to close-in manoeuvring fights.
The milestone also represents a significant boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence, as Astra Mk1 is a product of India’s indigenous missile development ecosystem led by DRDO, while the integration showcases HAL and IAF’s growing competence in complex weapons integration on indigenous platforms.
As the IAF prepares to induct larger numbers of the Mk1A, this successful missile integration positions the Tejas as a combat-ready, networked, and lethal fighter, capable of holding its own against contemporary regional adversaries.
