The death of a politician, leader, or veteran of immense stature and national importance in a tragic accident often sparks a flood of perspectives and interpretations.

Such incidents often trigger a convergence of grief, speculation, and reflection, leaving the circumstances emotionally charged and open to interpretation. However, it serves a crucial purpose and raises questions that might otherwise be ignored or forgotten over time.

Matters of safety, accountability, systemic gaps, and even broader social or political dynamics come to the forefront, compelling society to examine issues that routine events tend to bury.

In this way, the tragic loss of a prominent figure becomes not only a moment of mourning but also a catalyst for inquiry, debate, and potentially meaningful change.

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader was among the four others killed in an aircraft crash in Pune district on Wednesday morning.

The sudden demise of Ajit Pawar sent shockwaves across the political landscape, and amid the grief and disbelief, swirling conspiracy theories have begun to take shape, suggesting that his death could be part of a high-profile strategic plot.

From political commentators to social media forums, speculation about motives, timing, and hidden agendas has sparked intense debate, turning the tragedy into a national talking point.

What We Know:

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that the crash occurred around as the aircraft was attempting to land in Pune’s Baramati, killing all those on board.

As per Flight Radar, the flight took off from Mumbai at 8.10 am and it disappeared from radar around 8.45 am. Superintendent of Police, Sandip Singh Gill, confirmed that the aircraft crashed at 8:50 am.

The DGCA said that Ajit Pawar was on board the aircraft along with his security officer Vidip Jadhav, pilot-in-command Captain Sumit Kapur, first officer Captain Shambhavi Pathak and flight attendant Pinky Mali.

The aircraft was identified as a Learjet 45 operated by Delhi-based charter company VSR. The crew coordinated with the ground control staff to make a landing. Following this, the jet made two landing attempts as it initially failed to spot the runway.

After the crash, the Civil Aviation Ministry issued a release detailing the communication between the pilots flying the plane and the ATC on the ground.

As per Hindustan Times, a senior DGCA official familiar with the early probe into the crash said that the Learjet 45 crashed significantly short of the runway threshold but was well within the airstrip perimeter.

“There were no flames prior to touchdown,” said the person. “The last words heard from the crew were ‘oh shit’…,” the official added.

Theories Floating Around the Crash:

Several factors in Ajit Pawar’s case have fueled the emergence of conspiracy theories, even if no evidence points to foul play. His prominent political stature and influential role in Maharashtra politics naturally make any sudden death a subject of intense public interest.

The timing of the crash, occurring amid ongoing political maneuvers and alliances, has led some to speculate about possible ulterior motives.

Additionally, the high-profile nature of the accident, involving a private plane and the suddenness of the incident, creates room for suspicion in the absence of full public clarity on technical or environmental causes.

The involvement of multiple political factions and rivalries, combined with media speculation and social media amplification, further fuels narratives that hint at a planned strategy or targeted action, even if purely hypothetical.

In such cases, the combination of power, timing, and uncertainty often gives conspiracy theories a fertile ground to take root.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that she smells a political conspiracy behind the death of Ajit Pawar and there a Supreme Court-supervised probe should be conducted.

As per reports, accusing all “other agencies” of being “compromised”, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said that there were reported talks that Pawar was “willing to leave BJP” only two days ago and then the crash happened.

“I don’t know what is the fate of the opposition political parties but he was very much with the ruling party. But two days ago, I came to know that someone from another party had given a statement that Pawar was willing to leave the BJP, and now this has happened today,” Banerjee reportedly alleged.

“I demand a proper investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court. We have trust only in the Supreme Court and no other agency. All agencies have been completely compromised,” she added.

She further alleged that Pawar was preparing to rejoin the Nationalist Congress Party faction led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP), citing recent reports that have suggested such a possibility.

Responding to this, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday ruled out any conspiracy behind the plane crash that claimed the life of his nephew and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

“There is no conspiracy involved; it was purely an accident. Maharashtra has suffered a huge loss with Ajit Pawar’s passing. A capable leader and a great personality has left us today, and this loss can never be compensated,” Sharad Pawar said in his first public remarks following the tragedy.

Ajit Pawar had broken away from his uncle in 2023 to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party, a move that led to a split within the Nationalist Congress Party.

The speculation about a possible conspiracy and discussions on it were not limited to political circles but spread more widely.

An online theory emerged online, where a screenshot of Pawar’s Wikipedia page appeared to show his death being recorded hours before the crash, fuelling ongoing discussion.

Several plausible explanations may account for this observation since wikipedia is an open, online information repository that can be edited by registered users.

While it generally reflects verified news and event-based information, there have been isolated instances in which entries were inaccurate, misleading, or deliberately altered.

Turning to the timing of the update related to the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister’s death, Wikipedia records edits in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is five hours and thirty minutes behind Indian Standard Time (IST).

As a result, an edit made at 10:30 a.m. IST would appear as 5:00 a.m. UTC. This time-zone difference may have led to the confusion that fuelled online speculation.

In this instance, the discrepancy in timestamps across time zones is a likely explanation, particularly as conspiracy theories had already begun to gain traction.

Tragic Accidents That Shook India’s Leadership

Several prominent leaders of the country—such as Sanjay Gandhi, Madhavrao Scindia, GMC Balayogi, Cyprian Sangma, OP Jindal, Surendra Singh, Dorjee Khandu, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and Vijay Rupani, lost their lives in similar accidents.

More recently, in 2021, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, along with his wife and several others, died in a helicopter crash, sending shockwaves across the nation.

Apart from aviation disasters, former Union Minister for Rural Development Gopinath Munde died in a road accident near India Gate in 2014.

Despite the tragic nature of these incidents, investigations have never established that any of these deaths were the result of a conspiracy.
