Modi Emerges as a Global Statesman as Israeli Ceasefire Under Trump Peace Plan Takes Shape
Share on FacebookShare on X

In a dramatic show of international diplomacy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as a central figure on the world stage, congratulating Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the breakthrough achieved under former U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza Peace Plan. This development marks a significant milestone in global efforts to restore peace in the Middle East and further cements Modi’s reputation as a world leader capable of navigating complex geopolitical landscapes.

The Israeli government voted to approve “phase one” of the Trump-brokered ceasefire and hostage release agreement with Hamas, following a tense cabinet meeting in Jerusalem. The vote was temporarily paused as Netanyahu took a phone call from Prime Minister Modi, a gesture that underscored the growing influence of India in global affairs.

According to Netanyahu’s office, during their conversation, PM Modi congratulated his Israeli counterpart on the progress made in securing the release of hostages and implementing a ceasefire. Modi later confirmed the call in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Called my friend, Prime Minister Netanyahu, to congratulate him on the progress made under President Trump’s Gaza peace plan. We welcome the agreement on the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. Reaffirmed that terrorism in any form or manifestation is unacceptable anywhere in the world.”

This direct endorsement of Trump’s peace plan and Modi’s proactive diplomatic gesture highlight the Indian leader’s growing relevance in global peacemaking efforts, especially at a time when international fault lines are becoming more complex and polarized.

Modi’s Expanding Global Role

This recent development follows a series of bold diplomatic initiatives taken by Prime Minister Modi, including his early efforts to act as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war. When Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, Modi consistently called for peace and dialogue, maintaining strategic relations with both Moscow and Kyiv. Initially, many critics, including members of India’s left-leaning political parties and communist factions, ridiculed Modi’s balanced approach. They labeled his stance as “ambiguous” and “diplomatic fence-sitting,” doubting whether India could exert any meaningful influence on the war.

However, time has proved otherwise. Modi’s persistent diplomatic outreach and ability to maintain communication with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have earned him praise internationally. Notably, even former U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged Modi’s statesmanship, praising his role in promoting peace and stability in Eastern Europe. Trump hailed Modi as “a respected leader” whose voice matters in the global quest for peace.

This commendation from Trump reflects a broader recognition of Modi’s role as not just a regional power broker, but as a statesman whose influence now spans continents.

From Mockery to Acknowledgment: The Turnaround

The Indian communist parties, who once jeered at Modi’s attempts to mediate in international conflicts, have been notably silent in recent months as the Indian Prime Minister’s diplomatic efforts have borne fruit. From being dismissed as idealistic, Modi’s peacemaking initiatives are now seen as part of a broader strategy of positioning India as a neutral yet influential power in global politics.

His telephone diplomacy with Netanyahu, set against the backdrop of one of the most entrenched and violent conflicts in the world—the Israel-Palestine dispute—only strengthens this image. That Netanyahu chose to pause a critical cabinet meeting to take Modi’s call is symbolic of the respect India now commands in global corridors of power.

Trump’s Peace Plan and India’s Support

Former President Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan, which had long been viewed with skepticism in some diplomatic circles, appears to be gaining traction amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The plan involves a multi-phase process, including a full ceasefire, hostage release, and eventual rebuilding of Gaza under international supervision.

Key players such as Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff were physically present during the Israeli government’s meeting that approved the plan. Trump, in a triumphant press conference, stated: “We ended the war in Gaza… and I think it’s going to be a lasting peace, hopefully, an everlasting peace.” He also hinted at a formal signing ceremony in Egypt, with the possibility of his own participation.

Trump’s tone was celebratory, but the quiet role played by Modi adds a layer of diplomacy that complements the brash American approach. India’s support lends the deal an air of legitimacy in the Global South, where Trump’s initiatives often face skepticism.

A Broader Vision of Global Peace

Modi’s recent engagements signal a pivot in India’s foreign policy—one that embraces proactive diplomacy on the world stage. While maintaining its traditional non-alignment, India under Modi has begun to assert itself as a stabilizing force in a world increasingly marred by conflict and division.

This is not merely symbolic. With global tensions flaring in multiple theatres—from Gaza to Ukraine to the South China Sea—the international community is desperately seeking credible mediators. Modi’s calibrated, non-confrontational diplomacy offers an alternative to the traditional power politics of the West and the aggression of authoritarian regimes.

Furthermore, India’s economic rise and demographic dominance give Modi the clout to push for peaceful resolutions in global forums such as the G20 and the United Nations. His statements on terrorism, echoed during his call with Netanyahu, reiterate India’s long-standing demand for a global consensus on terrorism—something that remains elusive but ever more urgent.

Conclusion: A Defining Moment for Modi—and India

The recent Israeli ceasefire and Modi’s involvement in the process is not just another diplomatic achievement—it is a defining moment in India’s post-independence history. It shows how far the nation has come from being a passive observer to an active shaper of global events.

Modi’s outreach to Netanyahu, his support for Trump’s peace initiative, and his earlier efforts in the Russia-Ukraine conflict position him as a serious global statesman. In doing so, Modi has effectively silenced his critics at home, particularly among Indian communists who underestimated the strategic depth of his foreign policy.

As world leaders scramble to put out fires across multiple continents, Narendra Modi’s steady and inclusive approach may well offer the blueprint for a new kind of leadership—one that is assertive, respected, and rooted in the principle of peaceful coexistence.

In a world thirsting for peace, Modi’s emergence as a credible voice of reason marks a rare and refreshing turn in international diplomacy.
