Prime Minister Narendra Modi observed the ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ on Thursday and paid tribute to all the countless people who endured the “upheaval and pain” during the most tragic chapter of our history—“partition of India.”
The Prime Minister said that the day of August 14 serves as a reminder to honour the grit of those people and their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh.
Taking to his social media handle on X, PM Modi posted, “India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit…their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh.”
“Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones. This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,” posted PM Modi.
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is al national memorial day observed to commemorate the victims and sufferings of people during the 1947 partition of India. It was first observed in 2021, after an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The day remembers the sufferings of many Indians during the partition. Numerous families were displaced and many lost their lives in the partition.
It aims to remind Indians the need to remove social divisions, disharmony and to further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.
On 14 August 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that 14 August annually will be remembered as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to remind the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during the partition in 1947.
He said. “Partitions pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, May the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.”
Meanwhile, The Government of India has launched the Har Ghar Tiranga (HGT) campaign on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
This year, Har Ghar Tiranga will be celebrated across the nation from August 2-15 with the idea to instill the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of Indians and pay patronage to the journey of India and those patriots who have contributed towards creating this nation.
India gears up to celebrate its 79th Independence Day in 2025, commemorating the nation’s freedom from British rule.
The celebrations will include flag hoisting, patriotic songs, and events promoting national unity, especially among the youth.
The Prime Minister’s address at the Red Fort will follow traditional protocols, honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters and celebrating India’s heritage.
