The Indian Army on Thursday successfully foiled a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Two heavily armed terrorists were neutralised, while intelligence inputs suggest that at least five more terrorists could still be hiding in the area. A massive combing operation has been launched to eliminate any remaining threat.
Operation Naushera Nar IV: Swift Action on the LoC
The encounter unfolded near Naushehra Naar under Operation Naushera Nar IV, a joint initiative of the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police (JKP). Acting on specific intelligence, alert troops detected suspicious movement across the LoC. When challenged, the infiltrators opened indiscriminate fire, sparking a fierce gun battle.
The Army responded with “effective fire,” eliminating two terrorists on the spot. Their bodies were recovered during a sweep of the area at first light. Troops continued a systematic search of the region to ensure no additional infiltrators had slipped through.
In its official statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed: “Based on intelligence provided by JKP regarding a likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity, challenged the infiltrators, and responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists. Operation is in progress.”
Ongoing Search for Remaining Militants
While two terrorists have been eliminated, intelligence reports indicate that at least five more militants from the group may still be hiding in the dense terrain of the Gurez sector. The Army has cordoned off the entire region and pressed into service drones, night-vision equipment, and other high-tech surveillance systems to prevent any further breach.
Security officials underscored the significance of the operation, stating that infiltration attempts are a part of Pakistan-backed terror groups’ strategy to push militants into Indian territory ahead of significant national events and seasonal changes. “Our forces are fully alert, and any such attempts will be dealt with decisively,” an Army officer said.
Recent Anti-Terror Operations in J&K
The Gurez encounter comes close on the heels of another major counter-terror operation conducted earlier this month under Operation Akhal. In that operation, six terrorists linked to The Resistance Front (TRF) a proxy of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were neutralised in the Akhal forest area of Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation began on August 1 after intelligence inputs revealed the presence of heavily armed militants. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation, which quickly escalated into an encounter. While three terrorists were killed on the first day, the operation resumed the next morning, resulting in the elimination of three more. One soldier sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.
Officials later confirmed that the TRF terrorists were also responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Their elimination marked a significant blow to the group’s network in the Valley.
Significance of the Gurez Operation
The Gurez sector, owing to its rugged terrain and proximity to the LoC, has historically been a vulnerable point for infiltration attempts. Thursday’s successful operation underscores both the preparedness of Indian troops and the continued attempts by terror groups to destabilise peace in the region.
Military analysts point out that such infiltration bids are often carried out with the support of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, aiming to push trained militants into Indian territory to execute attacks on civilians and security forces. The use of advanced surveillance technology, combined with close coordination between the Army and police, has significantly enhanced India’s ability to detect and neutralise such threats at the border itself.
India’s Unwavering Resolve Against Terror
The foiling of the infiltration attempt in Gurez sector once again highlights the Indian Army’s vigilance and operational readiness in defending the nation’s borders. The swift elimination of two terrorists, combined with ongoing efforts to track down the remaining infiltrators, sends a strong message to Pakistan-backed terror groups: India will not allow its sovereignty to be compromised.
As the Indian Army continues its operations in Jammu and Kashmir, each encounter underscores the larger reality that terrorism will find no space on Indian soil. With increased cooperation between security forces, high-tech surveillance, and the resilience of local communities, the Valley is steadily closing its doors on infiltrators who seek to spread chaos.
