Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a firm warning during his speech on the occasion of 79th Independence Day to those attempting to alter India’s demographic balance through illegal infiltration. From the ramparts of the Red Fort, he announced the High-Power Demography Mission a nationwide initiative to counter infiltration, safeguard livelihoods, protect tribal lands, and ensure the safety of women. Calling demographic manipulation a deliberate conspiracy, PM Modi declared that India would never surrender to infiltrators who threaten its social harmony and national security. His message was clear: those who snatch the rights of Indian citizens have no place in India.
PM Modi Announces High-Power Demography Mission
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a High-Power Demography Mission to protect the country from the dangers posed by illegal immigrants. Speaking on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said the mission would directly confront infiltration and demographic manipulation, which he described as a “danger looming over India.”
“I would like to alert the nation about a concern, a challenge. Under a well-thought-out conspiracy, the country’s demography is being changed, and seeds of a new crisis are being sown. These infiltrators are snatching away the livelihood of the youth of my country. They are targeting our sisters and daughters. They are misleading the adivasis and grabbing their lands. This will not be tolerated,” PM Modi said.
Infiltration: A Direct Threat to National Security
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that infiltration is not merely a local law-and-order issue but a grave national security challenge, especially in sensitive border areas.
“When demographic change takes place in border areas, it causes a threat to national security… No country can hand over its future to infiltrators. Then how can we? Not to allow such activities is our duty to our ancestors who gifted us an Independent India,” he said.
He stressed that infiltration changes the population balance in strategically important zones, enabling hostile forces to exploit the situation. According to security agencies, many infiltrators operate under false identities, often blending into local populations while engaging in criminal, extremist, or anti-national activities.
Government’s Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants
In recent years, Indian authorities have intensified efforts to detect and deport illegal immigrants, particularly in urban centres and states bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar. Verification drives have been stepped up, with the aim of identifying foreign nationals living under forged documents.
PM Modi’s announcement of the High-Power Demography Mission signals a national-level, coordinated strategy to curb infiltration. The mission will bring together intelligence agencies, border security forces, and local administrations to plug entry routes, verify suspicious settlements, and ensure that the rights and resources of Indian citizens are not stolen.
Prime Minister Modi’s tough stance comes amid growing evidence that infiltrators are exploiting welfare schemes, taking up jobs meant for Indians, and acquiring land illegally — in some cases, in regions critical to India’s defence preparedness.
Political Opposition and Mamata Banerjee’s Objections
The Prime Minister’s remarks also took aim at political leaders who downplay the infiltration crisis for vote-bank politics. His warning comes as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), have repeatedly accused the central government of “targeting Bengali-speaking Indians” under the pretext of anti-Bangladeshi crackdowns.
Recently, the issue escalated into a public spat after Delhi Police referred to a translation as “written in Bangladeshi,” prompting the TMC to allege that the BJP was “promoting xenophobia” and “deliberately targeting Bengalis.” The BJP, however, maintains that such remarks are dangerously misleading and ignore the security threat posed by unchecked infiltration.
BJP’s media cell chief Amit Malviya demanded that Ms Banerjee be “held accountable under the National Security Act,” saying, “To claim otherwise, and call on Bengalis to rise against the Centre, is deeply irresponsible. Mamata Banerjee should be held accountable.”
Political observers note that while Ms Banerjee attempts to frame the crackdown as an ethnic or linguistic issue, the ground reality remains clear — illegal infiltration is a cross-border security threat, not a language debate.
A Mission for India’s Future
The High-Power Demography Mission marks a decisive step in defending India’s territorial integrity, cultural identity, and socio-economic stability. By directly addressing the threat of infiltration, the government aims to protect the livelihoods of Indians, ensure the safety of women, and preserve tribal lands from illegal encroachment.
PM Modi’s Independence Day message leaves no room for doubt infiltrators and those shielding them will be dealt with firmly. As the Prime Minister put it, India cannot and will not “hand over our nation to infiltrators.” In the face of political opposition and external pressure, the government’s resolve is clear: national security comes first, and protecting the rights of Indian citizens is non-negotiable.
