The woman, Sanjanu Parveen, confessed that she made the video on the instructions of her relative, a political worker from Malda, with the intent to defame Delhi Police. What Mamata shared as “atrocious and terrible” turned out to be a staged drama cooked up for political manipulation. The Delhi Police’s prompt action exposed the entire ploy, leaving Mamata Banerjee red-faced and accused of amplifying fake news to incite public outrage and play linguistic victimhood politics.
Mamata’s Viral Post and the Fabricated Story
On July 28, Mamata Banerjee took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and posted a video alleging that a migrant Bengali woman from Malda’s Chanchal area and her child were brutally assaulted by Delhi Police. “Atrocious!! Terrible!!” she wrote, adding that the child had also been beaten and called the act a result of the BJP’s “linguistic terror” against Bengalis. The video showed a child with minor scratches, followed by the woman, Sanjanu Parveen, accusing Delhi Police personnel of forcibly taking them to a secluded location at 10:30 PM on July 26 and beating them while demanding ₹25,000. The post created immediate outrage on social media and was widely circulated by anti-BJP handles, attempting to stir communal and regional tensions.
Delhi Police Bust the Lie with CCTV and Confession
However, within hours of the video going viral, Delhi Police swung into action. A team led by DCP East Delhi, Abhishek Dhania, launched a thorough inquiry. They reviewed CCTV footage, gathered technical intelligence, and interviewed the woman. The evidence completely contradicted her story. Speaking to ANI, Dhania confirmed, “Based on technical and local intelligence, as well as CCTV footage, we found out that the whole story told by this lady is baseless.” The woman later admitted during interrogation that her relative from Malda, who is a political worker, instructed her to fabricate the story and record the video. The relative later circulated the video in local media. Delhi Police termed the entire incident a deliberate attempt to tarnish their image and trigger a communal narrative ahead of political events. DCP Dhania added that multiple teams were formed to get to the truth quickly and decisively. “After a thorough investigation, we concluded that the entire video is fabricated and has been deliberately circulated to damage the image of Delhi Police,” he stated. The department is now considering further legal action for misinformation.
Amit Malviya Slams Mamata’s Fake Narrative
Reacting sharply to the controversy, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya called out Mamata Banerjee for promoting falsehood and inciting communal sentiments. He termed the entire episode a “shame on evil Mamata Banerjee for spreading fake news.” Malviya pointed out that this is not the first time Mamata has tried to communalize a law-and-order issue for political mileage. He emphasized that her tweet was not just irresponsible but dangerous, as it attempted to fuel hate and suspicion among communities. He also warned that such baseless allegations erode public trust in police institutions and promote a culture of victimhood for electoral gains. Malviya demanded an apology from the West Bengal CM and urged media platforms to fact-check such high-voltage claims before broadcasting them.
