Union Home Ministry has moved a resolution in Parliament seeking a six-month extension of the President’s rule in Manipur, a state grappling with prolonged ethnic violence.
President’s rule was first imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh amid escalating political instability and unrest.
On July 25, Amit Shah had already moved a statutory resolution to extend the President’s rule until February 13, 2026, which was accepted by the Rajya Sabha.
Under the motion, the President’s rule will be extended till February 13, 2026, after the Parliament’s concession.
According to the official statement in the Lok Sabha’s list of business, Amit Shah will propose, “That 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August 2025.”
“That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025,” the Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Bulletin stated.
In February, President Droupadi Murmu imposed President’s rule in Manipur after receiving a report from the state governor.
Then Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned amid violence and political instability that had plagued the state for nearly two years.
Alongside this motion, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, will introduce the ‘Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024’.
The bill seeks to amend existing laws on merchant shipping to align with India’s international maritime obligations, promote the growth of Indian shipping, and ensure the efficient operation of the Indian mercantile marine in the national interest.
Lok Sabha MP PP Chaudhary and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will move a motion recommending that the Rajya Sabha appoint a new member to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill.
This move comes following the retirement of P Wilson from the Rajya Sabha.
The motion states, “That this House do recommend to Rajya Sabha that it appoint one Member of Rajya Sabha to the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the vacancy caused by the retirement of P Wilson, and communicate to this House the name of the Member so appointed.”
