In an incident that should set off alarm bells in every defence ministry from Athens to New Delhi, Greek authorities arrested four Chinese citizens- two men, a woman, and even a teenager, for photographing Rafale fighter jets and other sensitive installations near the Tanagra Air Base.
Despite repeated warnings from security personnel, they continued filming from a nearby bridge, deliberately flouting military restrictions. When finally apprehended, they were found carrying a large cache of photographic material, enough to suggest this was no innocent mistake.
Beijing’s Spy Game:
Let’s be clear: this wasn’t a coincidence. This was China’s intelligence network doing what it does best- infiltrating, observing, stealing.
Greece isn’t a geopolitical rival. It’s not in direct conflict with China. But that didn’t matter. Why? Because Greece flies the same jets that India does- Rafales. Beijing knows that learning about Greek deployments could provide a backdoor into understanding India’s military capabilities. This was an intelligence op wearing a tourist’s face.
Every Chinese Citizen Is a Spy-in-Waiting
Unlike in democratic nations, Chinese law mandates that every citizen must assist the state in intelligence work. So whether it’s a student, a businessman, or a teenager with a smartphone, any Chinese national can be deployed as a tool of the Communist Party.
China’s spying is not random. It’s organized, state-backed, and deeply embedded. It’s not just cyber hacks and data theft, it’s physical espionage in allied countries. And this is exactly what happened in Greece.
India Cannot Afford to Be Naive Anymore
This isn’t Greece’s problem, it’s India’s too. China is playing a long war of deception and surveillance, and India is already in the crosshairs.
If the Chinese are gathering intel on Rafales in Greece, they’re doing it because India flies them too. And if they’re targeting friendly nations today, it’s only a matter of time before they strike closer to home- through Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, or within.
China has set up listening posts and intelligence bases in our neighbourhood. It uses trade routes, student visas, and tech exports to mask its espionage efforts. And we’re still playing catch-up.
Wake-Up Call for Indian Intelligence
What more will it take? China is not hiding its intentions. It’s flexing its spy network in the open. The Tanagra incident proves one thing, no location is too far, no ally too irrelevant, no defence asset too protected.
India must:
Strengthen counter-espionage around strategic defence bases
Crack down on Chinese-linked companies and personnel with scrutiny
Form a tight intelligence-sharing grid with nations using similar military hardware
Conclusion: China Is Watching. So Must We.
The idea that China only spies on its enemies is a myth. It spies on everyone. And the Rafale incident in Greece is proof. India must stop treating such stories as ‘external matters.’ They are dry runs, rehearsals for the real operation.
China isn’t just testing Greek patience. It’s testing Indian complacency.
