The Calcutta High Court has granted interim bail to 22-year-old law student and influencer Sharmistha Panoli, who was arrested last week for allegedly posting a controversial video on social media.
Panoli, who hails from Pune, was taken into custody by Kolkata Police from Gurugram after her video — reportedly related to ‘Operation Sindoor’ — was accused of hurting religious sentiments and promoting disharmony. Though she later deleted the clip and issued a public apology, the video had already gone viral, triggering backlash and a police case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Health Concerns and Legal Appeal
Panoli’s legal team appealed for bail citing her medical condition, particularly a kidney ailment that requires ongoing care. Her lawyers also raised concerns about the conditions she was held in, noting limited access to reading material and difficulties in managing her health during custody.
The court, acknowledging these concerns, granted her interim bail and directed authorities to ensure her continued cooperation with the investigation.
