At a time when the country is reeling from the pain of the shocking Pahalgam terror attack, when families are mourning their loved ones they have lost, and when the tri-colour flutters at half-mast in sorrow — India expected unity, empathy, and a deep sense of national responsibility from its public figures. But instead, we saw Olympic gold medalist and army officer Neeraj Chopra extend an invitation to a Pakistani athlete — Arshad Nadeem — to compete on Indian soil.
It doesn’t matter that the invitation was sent before the attack. The very act of inviting an athlete from a country whose soil continues to breed and shelter terrorists who target India and its innocent civilians, shows a glaring disconnect from the current emotional climate of this nation.
Moreover Neeraj Chopra is not just another athlete. He is himself an officer in the Indian Army. Chopra is a Subedar serving in the Rajputana Rifles. He is better aware than most about the sacrifices the Indian Army has made and the pain and grief Pakistan has wrecked in India. It is quite shocking that common people have to remind him about the incessant back stabbings of Islamabad.
No matter what camaraderie he shares with Nadeem, has Neeraj forgotten that just a little time back a video had surfaced showing Arshad Nadeem having a casual correspondence with a designated terrorist. The footage shows Nadeem in conversation with Mohammad Harris Dhar, identified by the US Treasury Department as a specially designated global terrorist with links to the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group. The LeT is the same extremist terror group that has claimed responsibility for the shocking Pahalgam attacks that targeted innocent civilian Hindu tourists.
On top of all this is Neeraj Chopra not aware that Pakistani cricketers have been banned from the IPL since the devastating 2008 Mumbai attacks. As the premier athlete representing India isn’t it also his responsibility to make sure he maintains his nations stance. The same nation that has made him a global superstar.
Now that he is a national icon, someone young Indians look up to with awe. That pedestal comes with enormous responsibility — not just to be a world-class athlete, but a conscientious citizen. And when your fellow countrymen are being killed based on their religion, when mothers are mourning their sons, is this really the time to speak of sporting brotherhood?
The fact that Chopra has had to come out and clarify after being heavily criticized online speaks enough. If you truly understood the gravity of what this country has just endured, such a decision would never have been made in the first place.
In his statement on X, Chopra says, “My country and its interests will always come first.” But actions speak louder than words, Neeraj. You say you extended the invitation as one athlete to another. But your role today is bigger than that of just an athlete. You represent India. You carry our flag on international podiums. And when you make decisions that are perceived to disregard national sentiments, you don’t just hurt your image — you dent the morale of millions.

India isn’t angry that you are a man of peace or sportsmanship. We’re angry that you are tone-deaf to the realities on the ground. You say your family is being targeted. But ask yourself — who made this moment about an individual rivalry, when the whole nation is still counting its dead?
The Neeraj Chopra Classic could have easily been a moment of unifying Indian athletes and celebrating national sporting talent. Instead, it got mired in controversy because of one reckless invitation. When the country is hurting, the last thing it needs is an elite voice extending olive branches to those from across the border, even symbolically, going completely against the stance of the nation.
You speak of false narratives and personal attacks, and yes, abuse is never acceptable. But perhaps this outrage could have been avoided if a little more sensitivity and foresight were shown. Chopra has a huge platform with an amazing reach however when you choose such a moment to talk about inclusion and global sportsmanship, while your own nation bleeds, you’re not being a peacemaker — you’re being irresponsible.
Neeraj Chopra must understand that love for one’s country cannot just be expressed through medals and flags. It is reflected in the decisions in support of your nation, and not your personal ones, especially ones that place you as a personal comrade of a man quite content with rubbing his shoulders with terrorists. Chopra, the country expects better from you and instead of long drawn out explanations an apology and a promise to do better would have sufficed. One can only hope he learns from this huge folly and focuses on his career as an athlete and not sink himself as yet another in the long list of people gone awry after joining the ‘aman ki asha’ brigade.
